London Hit as Skepticism Grows on 'Terror War' |
by Jim Lobe (No verified email address) |
Current rating: 0 08 Jul 2005
Modified: 07:40:58 PM |
"The fact that al Qaeda or one of its affiliates has now struck in the heart of another western capital -- and Washington's closest ally, no less -- could add to the growing sense that the Iraq war was and remains a diversion from the fight against al Qaeda, despite the reportedly growing participation of radical Islamists in that conflict." |

World Movement of Democracy, More than a Luckless Acronym? |
by Tom Barry (No verified email address) |
Current rating: 0 08 Jul 2005
|
Neoconservatives inside and outside the Bush administration have been central players in an array of government-backed initiatives such as the World Movement for Democracy (WMD) and the Community of Democracies, as well as in the democracy promotion programs of such neocon-led institutes as Freedom House and the American Enterprise Institute.
Although the World Movement for Democracy states that it ”does not advocate positions on particular political issues,” the network's website and publications, such as NED's ezine DemocracyNews, largely reflect the U.S. government's foreign policy positions with respect to countries such as Venezuela and Cuba.
NED and the WMD are also promoters of the U.S.-led Community of Democracies -- which has been greeted with widespread skepticism by many European nations who regard it as a U.S. strategy to skirt U.N. authority. |

Mr. Wheeler, your outstanding organization has an incredible reach into classrooms across our nation. The Judy Miller Media Hug-Fest |
by Rosa Brooks (No verified email address) |
Current rating: 0 07 Jul 2005
|
It was Miller, more than any other reporter, who helped the White House sell its WMD-in-Iraq hokum to the American public. Relying on the repeatedly discredited Ahmad Chalabi and her carefully cultivated administration contacts, Miller wrote story after story on the supposedly imminent threat posed by Saddam Hussein.
Only problem: Her scoops relied on information provided by the very folks who were also cooking the books. But because Miller hid behind confidential sources most of the time, there was little her readers could use to evaluate their credibility. |
