CONTROVERSY OVER CLASSIFIED RESEARCH ON CAMPUS

According to opponents of the proposed restrictions, it is not classified research that conflicts with academic freedom but rather the efforts to restrict such research. This is clever, but not quite persuasive since it evades the question of whether the restrictions on access, speech and publication entailed by classification can ever be "consistent with the mission of the university."

To a significant extent, the uproar over the Office of Strategic Influence could end up leaving the impression that the Pentagon has a policy of being truthful with journalists. Such tactics can only succeed, of course, to the extent that journalists are gullible -- or believe that they must pretend to be -- while encouraging the public to go along with the charade.
