The Iraqis will have to learn democracy someplace else
Sam is one our original columnists here at UC IMC. While we support citizen involvement in the journalistic enterprise, we also work to make available good journalism from professionals that get far too little exposure in the dominant media. Thus we have carried columns from Sam Smith, Mark Weisbrot, and others, usually on the Elsewhere Newswire.
This piece from Sam is so good, it deserves more exposure than it would get lower down. Sam minces no words with those who wrap themselves in the flag as the try to pick your pocket. We've heard a lot from people like those he talks about below, whether it's on North Prospect or here on Indymedia. It's empowering to see Sam strip away the hubris associated with recently fashionable triumphalism. ML |

The Myth Of The Spat-Upon Veteran |

Lembcke was not able to find a single photograph, news story, or FBI report of veterans being spat upon (remember, the FBI did obsessive surveillance of the peace movements). He tried to track down individuals who said they had been spat upon or witnessed it, but they "dissolved on scrutiny" and others "betrayed lack of authenticity"--which, I assume, means they lied. So what is going on here? |

US Rep Tim Johnson To Vote For $100,000 Tax Cut For Millionaires? |
by NYTimes via ML (No verified email address) |

It looks like Congressman Tim Johnson, always in the hip-pocket of House leader Dennis Hastert, will vote for an even bigger tax cut than the one he did as the War on Iraq started, taking the money from veteran's benefits (see: http://www.ucimc.org/feature/display/11427/index.php). If Tim is willing to kick ex-servicemembers in the teeth for a smaller tax cut, is there any reason he would not vote for an even bigger tax cut than Bush has proposed?
It sure looks that way, with rich Republican campaign contributors expecting a pay-back for their support. According to the New York Times, the plan will put an greater burden on working families who make less than $50,000 a year, while doing far less than it could to assist a sputtering economy that will be the biggest issue in the 2004 campaign.
Will Johnson denounce this give-away or will he vote for it? The voters will be watching a man who has already renounced his promise to spend only a limited time in Washington, if elected to Congress. |
