While the INS is out chasing down college students like Ahmed Ben-Souda for technical violations of visa regulations, the incompetent immigration agency cannot deal effectively with a law-breaking capitalist who engages in human slavery. Which is the real threat to the average American worker? Some kid who's dropped out of college or a cut-throat businessman who is driving down wages for all workers in an economy already depressed by war by trafficking in human chattel?

Workers Pay Brutal Price for Cheap Fruit

It is 11 miles up a dirt track to the first packing plant where the fruit is wrapped in polythene and prepared for shipping to the US and Europe where it is sold under the Bonita brand. Banana exports, a mainstay of the Ecuadorian economy, are worth about $900 million each year. The country produces more than a quarter of the world's crop but wages are low. Workers at Los Alamos are paid between $25 and $30 for an 84-hour week.
