Over 2.8 million workers have completely run out of federal jobless benefits. During the last recession when President George H.W. Bush was in office, the federal program provided 26 weeks of federal extended benefits at its peak, with workers in many states receiving 33 weeks. With long-term unemployment now just as severe as it was during the last recession (and still growing), the 13 weeks of benefits available today are just not enough for most families. |

This update and commentary on the upcoming FCC review of media ownership/consolidation rules was read on the mediageek radio show, which airs Fridays at 5:30 PM on community radio WEFT 90.1 FM.
The FCC will be voting on revisions to current media ownership rules on June 2, and so the topic of media ownership and consolidation is dominating media news right now. Although the FCC's public comment period has long passed and the Commission completed its one and only official public hearing on the issue, public interest groups, citizen groups, academics and legislators are all putting increased pressure on the FCC to tread lightly on the nation's media ownership regulations, or to even delay the looming vote deadline. ...
However, we also have to remember that it is Congress that put us in this mess in the first place, not just the FCC. Even though it is the FCC that is charged with making, reviewing and revising media ownership regulation, it is Congress that wrote and passed the laws that define the context and the limits of these regulations. ...
