Even after the past week's carnage, the price-to-earnings ratio of the average stock is about 20 to 1, or about a third higher than its historical average of 15 to 1. Before the tech stock bubble began to deflate, we often heard that we were living in a "new economy" in which such "old economy" rules relating stock prices to earnings didn't apply. We now know that these pronouncements were delusional.

CESAR BLANCO Moreno was on his way from work last month when he was shot dead in the street. The unknown gunmen made their escape. Everyone in the town knew why Cesar had been killed.He worked at the Ecopetrol oil refinery in the Colombian city of Bucaramanga. And he was the leader of the USO oil workers' trade union branch in the city. Cesar was the 68th trade unionist to be murdered in Colombia so far this year. The South American country is the most dangerous place in the world to be a trade unionist.

Auction was corrupt in concept but to exclude the public that paid, and perhaps sat in jurors chairs or in other parts of the courthouse? The silent auction caught flack from angry taxpayers who screamed. No prices were published. Who got the stuff and the money?
