We got a glimpse this week at who is going to pay for the fiscal irresponsibility of this administration.
It's our farmers, our veterans, our frail elderly who are going to pay for George Bush's tax cuts for the rich and for the ill-conceived, incredibly expensive war, which have combined to throw our nation into such debt that other nations are starting to worry about our economic health. |

On January 27th, President Bush, in an interview with the Times, assured the world that “torture is never acceptable, nor do we hand over people to countries that do torture.” Maher Arar, a Canadian engineer who was born in Syria, was surprised to learn of Bush’s statement. Two and a half years ago, American officials, suspecting Arar of being a terrorist, apprehended him in New York and sent him back to Syria, where he endured months of brutal interrogation, including torture. When Arar described his experience in a phone interview recently, he invoked an Arabic expression. The pain was so unbearable, he said, that “you forget the milk that you have been fed from the breast of your mother.” |

Dick Cheney has continued to cloak the composition of his 2001 energy task force in secrecy. The Federal Advisory Committee Act says the government must disclose the work of groups that include non-federal employees. A lawsuit is pending to force disclosure. Jane Mayer of The New Yorker suggests that the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq was may have been planned well in advance of the September 11th crisis - planned for the benefit of US corporations.

There are many, many soldiers in all branches who feel the same way I do about war. Most of these soldiers are not aware that the option of discharge or alternate service as a conscientious objector is available to them. Of those who come to the conclusion that war is unethical, many feel their only options are insubordination, deception, or desertion. Some of them face imprisonment without ever realizing that there is a perfectly legal mechanism within the Army to recognize their opposition to war.
Last week, I, along with several other conscientious objectors from across the country, launched www.peace-out.com, a comprehensive online resource for soldiers wishing to become CO's. |

The Republican senators who have devoted their careers to mauling the United Nations are seldom accused of shyness. But they went strangely quiet on Thursday. Henry Hyde became Henry Jekyll. Norm Coleman's mustard turned to honey. Convinced that the UN is a conspiracy against the sovereignty of the United States, they had been ready to launch the attack which would have toppled the hated Kofi Annan and destroyed his organization. |

Tomorrow February 9, 2005, the Regulation and Registration Committee of the Illinois House of Representatives is scheduled to hear testimony on HB645, the Certified Professional Midwife Licensure Act.
Consumer supporters of the Midwives Model of Care have been pushing similar legislation for decades. Supporters are hoping that 2005 will be the year to make real progress on assuring access to this evidence-based model of maternity care. With fewer and fewer options for homebirth providers, the public response to this bill has been overwhelming this legislative session. Some Springfield secretaries of legislators assigned to the Regulation and Registration Committee have been flooded with phone calls. So many calls are being received that the secretaries have stopped taking names and addresses. |
