Flacking for Big Tobacco: The Other Armstrong Williams Scandal |
by Bob Burton via goodriddancegipper (No verified email address) |
Current rating: 0 15 Jan 2005
|
As if the USA Today and the New York Times have not already done enough to expose Armstrong Williams as an expensive, butt-kissing shill for the Bush administration, here is another article by Bob Burton of PR Watch that smokes out Williams (pardon the pun) as kissing the butt of big cigarette companies (there I go again). It also reveals the importance of transparency and the need for government oversight, since Burton relies to a significant degree on tobacco industry documents that hide these relationships between big business and their oleaginous mouthpieces such as Williams. |

My Return to Baghdad: Flying Carpet Airlines |

Part of what makes Fisk such a salient and credible writer on the war in Iraq is his knowledge of US involvement in the Middle East. His references to both the bombing of the Marines base in Beirut and extensive US support for the Hussein regime throughout the 1970s and 1980s is well worth remembering, especially when we hear the Bush administration and others crow about our methods of "bringing democracy" to Iraq. |

Call for Entries
Deadline: January 5, 2005
Deadline Extended: January 19, 2005
The fifth annual Media That Matters Film Festival is a celebration of short films, videos, digital stories and new media that inspire people to speak out and take action for social change.
Our yearlong Festival features 24/7 online streaming, 20+ community screenings around the country, numerous national and local broadcasts and distribution of a DVD and Teacher's Guide to thousands of teachers and activists. Sixteen works will be chosen by a jury of esteemed filmmakers, activists, journalists and industry professionals. The festival will launch in May 2005 with a Premiere and a high-profile Awards Ceremony in New York City. (Previous hosts include rapper/activist Chuck D and comedian David Cross.)
Filmmakers will receive a cut of all VHS and DVD sales, and many official selections will receive $1,000 grants to be used for further outreach and distribution campaigns. That's right, in addition to the impact of Media That Matter's national outreach campaign, selected media makers will get $1,000 to create a Web site, send out mailings, publicize screenings, or to do any of the other things that will help your media and its important message mobilize audiences to take action.
The Media That Matters Film Festival is a project of MediaRights, a nonprofit organization that helps media makers, educators, librarians, nonprofits, and activists use documentaries to encourage action and inspire dialogue on contemporary social issues. Visit our site to learn more. |

Just in case some might need to be reminded about why the Bush administration is a pack of lying phonies, and why we have made a tremendous mistake with our war in Iraq, here are some gem quotes posted on Billmon, and linked on the Daily Kos website. What a steaming load the Bush administration has fed this country but, for too many people, fat doesn't meet greasy until they get a mouthful. The war in Iraq is just that mouthful, and a crying shame. |
