by Mike Lehman (No verified email address) |
Current rating: 0 06 Aug 2001

It is time to remember one of the two times that nuclear weapons were used in war-both times by the U.S., which remains the only nation to ever use these fearsome weapons. |

America's Working Poor Need a Raise |
by Barbara Ehrenreich (No verified email address) |
Current rating: 0 06 Aug 2001
|
The need for a Living Wage is growing greater by the day. So-called "economic development" policies that fail to address the incomes of working families are nothing more than thinnly disguised welfare for the rich. Real economic development means a rising tide lifting all boats, instead of only the yachts of the wealthy. If the system doesn't work for working people, then the system itself is corrupt. ML |

by Storm Bear Williams storm (nospam) nauseamanifesto.com (unverified) |
Current rating: 0 05 Aug 2001
|
George W. Bush has claimed that abstinence until marriage will prevent the spread of HIV and unwanted pregnancies. This is a reckless lie and it is the strongest attack yet against women and their reproductive rights. |

Drug tests: A class ritual |
by Ben Ehrenreich, LA Weekly (No verified email address) |
Current rating: 0 05 Aug 2001
|
Don't read this as some sort of plea for extending drug testing to all, equally-it isn't. Since the Fourth Amendent protections against unjust search and seizure have yet to be repealed (although they are under attack by the police and courts on a daily basis), read it as another reason why we need to respect constitutional liberties, instead of electing those who constantly seek to carve out exceptions for why some constitutional right needs to be ignored. Most of all it is a reason to end the stupidity and hypocrisy of the Drug War. Is anyone in Washington listening? |

Media, America Have Abandoned Working Folk |
by Molly Ivins (No verified email address) |
Current rating: 0 05 Aug 2001
|
Here's another one of Molly Ivins' columns that is just a little too hot handle for the News-Gazette. She used to be a regular on the N-G editorial page, but their opinion columns have taken a sharp right-ward turn in recent months, becoming dominated once again by the usual collection of retreaded, repetitive conservative columnists who would insist to the readers that they needn't give a thought to any other way of looking at things. Molly hits the nail right on the head here, explaining the corporate media's push for an agenda that includes only the wealthy and their concerns as being fit for public discussion. ML |

Communities Act to Limit or Ban Mega-Stores, Sprawl |
by Stacy Mitchell, ILSR (No verified email address) |
Current rating: 0 05 Aug 2001
|
Communities across the U.S. are acting to limit or ban maega-stores that create sprawl and undermine local businesses while they suck money out of communities. This undermining of local economies cancels most of the claimed economic advantages claimed by proponents of these developments, leaving communities to struggle with declining tax bases and low-wage jobs as locally-owned enterprises are forced out of business. Gov. Monopoly in Vietnam Dumps Catfish in Kitchen Globalization Scheme |
by Nyugen (No verified email address) |

I do not know if this is a corporation in South Vietnam or North Vietnam. The catfish is shipped to the States and then undersold to buyers cutting indigenous fish farmers out of the loop. |
