First They Came For The Terrorists...
Current rating: 0
11 Jan 2005
President George W. Bush has not asked Congress for, and has not been granted, a suspension of habeas corpus for his so-called "war on terrorism," a "war" which he and his advisors have implied may last well beyond our lifetimes.

Nonetheless, our President, with consent of his Counsel Mr. Gonzales, has locked people up, "per speciale Mandatum Domini Regis."

    Maytag Moves to Mexico

    10 Jan 2005
This article from In These Times further illustrates the difficulties that workers face in today's "free market." This news stands in direct contrast to Dubya's platitudes about how well the economy is supposedly performing, how low unemployment supposedly is, and how optimistic people ought to be. Moberg's work on labor is generally very good. Hopefully this spurs a positive and energetic discussion.

The Bush Proposals for Social Security Are About Dismantling the Current System - and Not Saving It
    Current rating: 0
    10 Jan 2005
There are many sensible ways to make Social Security secure without putting disproportionate or unfair burdens on anyone. Why has President Bush chosen to avoid all of the plans that make modest adjustments in benefits and taxes in favor of a radical dismantling of Social Security? Why rule all tax increases off the table?

Ohio Election Problems Highlight Urgent Need for Reform
    Current rating: 0
    10 Jan 2005
Some of our electoral procedures -- such as electronic voting with no paper record -- would not pass the laugh test in other democracies. This includes having a Bush campaign official -- Ken Blackwell in Ohio -- oversee statewide elections. At a recent press conference in which Russian President Vladimir Putin came under fire for undemocratic practices in his country, he retorted: "Do you think that the electoral system in the US is without flaws? Need I remind you of how elections were held in the US?"

Malpractice Suits Aren't What Needs Fixing Here
    Current rating: 0
    10 Jan 2005
Bush is pushing a bogus solution to a mostly non-existent problem. Since malpractice insurance accounts for only 2% of health care costs, even a 50% reduction in malpractice insurance costs ( a very, very unlikely result, given that malpractice insurers are not talking about cutting THEIR income) would only result in a 1% cut in costs to consumers. The last time a Bush lie got this much traction in the press, we ended up in an unwinnable war...

Crumbling Conservative Support for War: Republican Congressman Calls For Withdrawal From Iraq
    Current rating: 0
    10 Jan 2005
Coble, who has represented the 6th District since 1984, says he voted to give Bush sweeping war-making powers assuming the administration had a post-invasion strategy.

"If there was, I wish someone would tell me what it is or show it to me," he said. "I'd like to see it."

Washing Away the Lies about Disaster Relief
    Current rating: 0
    10 Jan 2005
As the fervor dies down and the media stops their fanatical coverage of this event, moving on as they inevitably do to the next celebrity basketball match or the next pentagon press release, what will happen to the tsunami victims?
