Some people are wondering why the New York Times and CBS' 60 minutes II would spend two and a half years investigating war crimes allegedly committed by former Senator Bob Kerrey 32 years ago in Vietnam. But this is journalism at its best: it is forcing people to rethink some important history, not just what happened on a moonless night in the village of Thanh Phong, but throughout that horrible war. |

Censorship in the United States today is seldom deliberate. Instead it comes stealthily under the heading Missed Opportunities. Mega-merged corporate media are predominantly interested in the entertainment value of news and the maintenance of high audience viewing/reading levels that lead to profitable advertising sales. Non-sexy or complex stories tend to receive little attention within these corporate media systems. |

The responsibility for this tragedy lies in Washington, DC. The US pressured Latin American countries into this policy in the first place. Quibbling about the actual details of this particular incident is irrelevant to this larger reality. Inconvenient "collateral damage," to be buried by the dominant media, doesn’t change the fact that the drug war itself causes far more damage and tragedy than any such results from drugs themselves. |
