COINTELPRO Redux -- It's No Longer Just A Rumor
"The F.B.I. is dangerously targeting Americans who are engaged in nothing more than lawful protest and dissent," said Anthony Romero, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union. "The line between terrorism and legitimate civil disobedience is blurred, and I have a serious concern about whether we're going back to the days of Hoover."
Maybe the FBI should try investigating systematic police brutality and violation of civil rights at demonstrations? THAT shouldn't be hard to find. |

Nick Turse has done an excellent job in documenting that My Lai and the Tiger Force atrocities were not isolated incidents, but he misses an important point. Disappearances, hideous torture techniques, mutilations, rapes, etc. are a very logical part of US counterinsurgency strategy. In Vietnam it was called the Phoenix Program. It is savage intimidation designed to reduce popular support for guerrillas. In recent terminology, it is shock and awe. |

The following is an archive of the breaking news posted to the U-C IMC website's Razorwire on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003. The news comes from reports phoned in live by U-C IMC reporters on the streets in the protests surrounding the FTAA Summit in Miami, FL.
The posts are in reverse chronological order, and show the sequence of events that afternoon. Most of the posts were made between 4 and 6 PM EST, when police violently rushed a large group of peaceful protestors. Our reporters called in just as the police began their offensive. |
