Although the strike was originally planned to last two days, only eight hours into the strike President Berger arranged to negotiate with strike leaders. An agreement was reached and signed four hours later, ending the strike peacefully. In the agreement, the Supreme Court, represented by its Chief Justice José Rolando Quezada Fernandez, agreed to investigate the legality and process of the recent land evictions. President Berger agreed that his government would promote concrete measures to deal with the agrarian conflict, including opening a special office on agrarian affairs and asking Congress to review the laws on land occupations, both of which had already been promised in the past. |

The Failed Seduction of John McCain - How Democrats Are Their Own Worst Enemy |
by Ted Rall (No verified email address) |
Current rating: 0 17 Jun 2004

Not since 1932 has it been so important for Democrats to win the presidency. George Bush, a dangerous, deranged demagogue, has got to go. Anybody But Bush: I coined the phrase, and I still mean it. But it would be the height of folly to brush off the implications of the Kerry-McCain dalliance. The Democratic nominee-apparent's judgment, and that of his advisors, has been grievously compromised. |

Nonprofit Hospitals [Including Provena] Said to Overcharge Uninsured |
by Reed Abelson and Johnathon B. Glater (No verified email address) |

There is little doubt that people without insurance are frequently charged the highest prices for care. The uninsured do not benefit from the ability of an insurer, health plan or large employer to negotiate low prices for care, and hospitals have typically charged their list price to people without insurance.
"While Provena gives private insurance companies and governmental third-party payers like Medicare and Medicaid large discounts off this gross or 'sticker price,' '' the suit said, "all of its uninsured patients are charged 100 percent of the full sticker price, which is two to three times more than Provena charges its insured patients for the same service."
"In reality, Provena is anything but charitable..." |

U.S. jobless rate misses "hidden" unemployed |
by Reuters (No verified email address) |
Current rating: 0 16 Jun 2004
|
The Bush Administration has been doing its best to promote recent incremental increases in employment statistics as proof that its economic polcies are finally bearing fruit. After all, they have an election they hope to win. The reality is that many Americans still cannot find work and that many of those who do find it cannot support their families on the meager wages paid in the service sector, where the limited growth in employment that is taking place is concentrated. A nearly 10% unemployment rate is nothing to brag about and actually represents the dismal failure of capitalism to deliver on its oft repeated promises. |
