Artists Subpoenaed in USA Patriot Act Case |
by Critical Art Ensemble (No verified email address) |

Even under the expanded powers of the USA PATRIOT Act, it is difficult to understand how anyone could view CAE's art as anything other than a "peaceful purpose." The equipment seized by the FBI consisted mainly of CAE's most recent project, a mobile DNA extraction laboratory to test store-bought food for possible contamination by genetically modified grains and organisms; such equipment can be found in any university's basic biology lab and even in many high schools. |

Rating Reagan: A Bogus Legacy |

The Reagan revolution continues today: the "war on terror" has replaced the Cold War as pretext for intervention abroad, including the disastrous war in Iraq. Bush lawyersd defend his right to order illegal torture, cite University of Illinois professor's text as justification
"After defining torture and other prohibited acts, the memo presents 'legal doctrines ... that could render specific conduct, otherwise criminal, not unlawful.' Foremost, the lawyers rely on the "commander-in-chief authority," concluding that 'without a clear statement otherwise, criminal statutes are not read as infringing on the president's ultimate authority' to wage war. Moreover, 'any effort by Congress to regulate the interrogation of unlawful combatants would violate the Constitution's sole vesting of the commander-in-chief authority in the president,' the lawyers advised." |
