Urbana-Champaign IMC receives federal non-profit status. |

The Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center Foundation (UCIMC) received notice today, June 13, 2001, that we were granted official federal 501(c)(3) [non-profit] status. According to our notification letter, "Based on information you supplied, and assuming your operations will be as stated in your application for recognition of exemption, we have determined you are exempt from federal income tax under section 501(a) of the Internal Revenue Code as an organization described in section 501(c)(3)." |

You might think that adults, seriously bent on ending the oppression of children, would take a close interest in children present [at a recent international conference of adults and younger people on *child labor*,] who had so triumphed over their own oppression as to become articulate advocates for their own cause. June 13 - This is the end of the eleventh day of the Vigil outside the Justice Center in Cincinnati. During the first three days of the Vigil, the local news media could not get enough of what was going on, why we were there and how long did we intend to stay (that's not to say that they got any of it right). Last Tuesday (June 5th) is the last day that people from the Mt. Adams demonstration were still in jail. Last Tuesday is the last day that any news media (except for Citybeat - a local alternative paper) have been here. |

Kidnapping Lincoln |

A group of lawyers on the Champaign County Board has been plotting to kidnap the statue of Lincoln from Carle Park, across from Urbana High School. They intend to hold him hostage at the courthouse when the massive new addition currently under construction is completed. It’s a move that seems to have at its root their desire to promote the association of Lincoln with present-day lawyers, something which probably has the old fellow spinning in his grave. |

Editor's Note: I wonder why the News-Gazette hasn't been keeping us appraised of the fact the "president" appears to be a blithering idiot. Surely the "idiot factor" looms as large as the idiot policies that are being pursued on his trip to Europe. He is doing a laughable job of representing the US, even if you are foolish enough to believe in his misguided approaches to public policy. |
