Local Media Blackout in Cincinnati Current rating: 0
13 Jun 2001
June 13 - This is the end of the eleventh day of the Vigil outside the Justice Center in Cincinnati. During the first three days of the Vigil, the local news media could not get enough of what was going on, why we were there and how long did we intend to stay (that's not to say that they got any of it right). Last Tuesday (June 5th) is the last day that people from the Mt. Adams demonstration were still in jail. Last Tuesday is the last day that any news media (except for Citybeat - a local alternative paper) have been here.
Several times I have seen the Channel 12 or the Channel 9 news vans drive past. One time the Channel 12 news van stopped at the Justice Center, the camera man went inside, came out and left. They know we are here, they see us yet they ignore and by ignoring, they lie to the public.

While Mt. Adams folks were still here, we were hot news. But now that our focus is on people jailed from the uprising, the prosecutor's office, the City Council, basically the whole damn mess of power and politics that is screwing people over in Cincinnati, we are persona non grata. Even the Channel 12 reporter who begged and bullied people to do interviews in order to tell "our" story (admittedly he didn't do such a bad job) has not even peeped at us since.

While there were still folks from the Mt. Adams action in jail, the general media spin was that out of town protesters were here and Cincinnati was on the map of "protest culture". After the people from the Mt. Adams action were all out of jail, that spin couldn't be used anymore. The Vigil is now glaringly about Cincinnati's ongoing problems. Issues that local media need to ignore (still have room for articles about the N' Sync concert on the front page) or gloss over in order to get back to business as usual, or just plain busine$$.
