FBI Inspector General's Report: More Evidence of Government Complicity in 9/11 Attacks
Current rating: 0
15 Jun 2005
author: wsws

A report released June 9 by the FBI's Office of the Inspector General raises new questions about the role of the US government in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The internal FBI study provides several important revelations about how US intelligence agencies ignored and even suppressed warnings in the period leading up to the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon that killed nearly 3,000 people.

In the American Bunker

15 Jun 2005
I have been shocked and awed in recent years by the desperate rigidity of many of the president's supporters in clinging to their conclusions about national and international affairs, even in the face of clear evidence to the contrary. I have had multiple conversations with such individuals which were abruptly truncated when solid evidence was placed on the table, as if they were simply psychologically unprepared to go where such facts inevitably led.

In my judgment, these Americans have entered into a post-empirical era of policy 'analysis' and political 'discussion', a time in which politics has become for them a faith-based enterprise. They believe what they believe, and there is neither need, nor desire, nor tolerance of dissenting information or opinion.

While it's easy to criticize public broadcasting for its tendency to reflect the corporate dominance of our society, would progressives really be better off without it?

Please do what you feel appropriate to sustain the limited alternatives to the exclusively corporate press that we now have.

And someone needs to press Representative Tim Johnson for his position on this. He's always trying to steer back to the middle of the road after throwing red meat to his base of conservative support. Tell Tim that if he supports cuts to public broadcasting, you will be sending an alternative representative to Congress in the 2006 election.

Social Security's "Crisis": The Myth That Won't Die
Current rating: 0
14 Jun 2005
On his ongoing Social Security privatization tour, President Bush has continued to tell Americans that something is gravely wrong with Social Security as it is currently structured. "...the people of this country are going to say to Republicans and Democrats alike: Why aren't you doing something about the problem?" he told an audience Wednesday. What exactly is the problem and why do we need benefit cuts for middle-income people and risky private accounts to solve it?
