THE HEAVY HAND AT THE CHAMPAIGN COUNTY JAIL |
by Sandra Ahten Email: spiritofsandra (nospam) hotmail.com |

(Read: Three Jail Suicides in Champaign County -- for background)
Hopefully part of the reason that Champaign County court system is so backed up, has been alleviated in the replacement of John Piland as states attorney. But the fact is, that it is backed up, and so, many of those who are being held in the Champaign County jail are people who are awaiting trial. They have not been found guilty. Those that are innocent and guilty alike are subject to days, months, and more in the Champaign County jail.
The conditions at the jail are for those who are guilty and for those who are innocent --. primarily it is for those who are *poor.* Those who have money can pay their bond --which allows them to be released from jail pending their trial. In many ways conditions at the Champaign County jail are much harsher than those in the state and federal prisons. The conditions could be characterized as inhumane. At the least, they are much more confining than they need to be and certainly lead to problems that might exacerbate mental health deterioration and / or depression.

Intel’s forgotten past: Wayne D. Pickette, African American father of the microprocessor |
by Philip Stinard repost from SFIMC Email: pstinard (nospam) hotmail.com |
08 Dec 2004
|
The official history of the development of the first microprocessor (“History of the 4004”, IEEE Micro, December 1996, pp. 10-20) leaves the reader with the impression that Federico Faggin, Marcian (Ted) Hoff, Stanley Mazor, and Masatoshi Shima were the sole designers and inventors of the 4004 microprocessor. These men, however, stood on the back of a giant, an unassuming young black inventor by the name of Wayne Douglas Pickette. Wayne’s contributions to the development of the 4004 have largely gone unrecognized by his former employer, Intel. Wayne has maintained collegial relations with former Intel coworkers, and when they speak, they often reminisce about those early days of microcomputer development. Wayne’s coworkers recognize his accomplishments; Intel, however, remains silent. |

December 9th concert to benefit memorial fund for Sgt. Shawna Morrison, killed in Iraq on 5 September 2004.
Featuring:
the Blackouts
the Beauty Shop
Headlights
New Sense
This show benefits the Shawna Morrison Memorial Fund, set up recently upon receiving news of Shawna’s death in Iraq earlier this fall. Her colleagues at Radio Maria—a restaurant in downtown Champaign—started the fund in an effort to give meaning to such a senseless, needless death. The fund’s purpose is to give financial support to someone who might be in a situation like Shawna was when she signed up for the United States Army and later the National Guard. |

Why would over 20 people from the Urbana/Champaign community drive hundreds of miles in the middle of November to join others to stand in front of a closed, locked and barbwire topped gate that opens onto a pine and fall foliage lined road in the state of Georgia? |

Enough voters in the 2004 election were more afraid of homosexuals than they were afraid of losing their health insurance, losing their job, losing their social security and losing their son or daughter to war. That’s crazy and frightening. Let's do something about it! |

On Monday, November 22nd at the 7:30PM, the Urbana City Council will consider a resolution directing the City of Urbana to begin airing "Democracy Now!" on UPTV, local public-access cable channel 6, by January 3, 2005. This resolution was drafted to counter ongoing censorship of this programming by Mayor Todd Satterthwaite.
