Imagine a Sustainable Champaign County |
by Joe Futrelle Email: futrelle (nospam) shout.net |

Imagine a Sustainable Champaign County ... that's the name of a county project to identify local environmental concerns and strategies to deal with them. The panel has been working on this for a while and has come up with a detailed report. I have included a link to the report and to the News-Gazette coverage of the panel's work.
The panel appears to be an attempt to corrall diverse stakeholders, including farmers, environmentalists, and urban planners. According to the NG story, it not only stresses sustainable land use and resource conservation, but also mixed-use urban planning strategies to combat sprawl.
I encourage anyone with an interest in these issues to review the report. |

Opportunity to Contribute to Tsunami Victims |

The destruction from this past week’s Tsunami has been devastating throughout
Southeast Asia, but particularly in Sri Lanka. As some of you know, I have been
working for the past few years with an international collective of small-scale
fishers. I have been in contact with Thomas Kocherry, the leader of India’s National Fishworker’s Forum. Though India has been hard hit, Thomas has asked that we send donations directly to the National Fisheries Solidarity of Sri Lanka to help with immediate needs of food, water and shelter. |

LOCAL GROUP ADVOCATES FOR CHANGES IN RESPONSE TO JAIL SUICIDES |
by Sandra Ahten Email: spiritofsandra (nospam) hotmail.com |
29 Dec 2004
|
A group of local citizens is joining together to encourage the Champaign County Sheriff and Champaign County Board to make adjustments to the local jail system on the heels of three suicides in the county jail in the last six months.
According to CU Citizens for Peace and Justice, two specific areas of present policy that must change, and may in turn reduce this troubling trend in suicide at the jail, are the extortionate rates charged inmates for phone calls to their families and the limited visitation oppportunities at the jail. Changes are needed in present policy so that those in the jail can maintain ties to their emotional support system in the community.
Questions have previously been raised by members of the county board about the justice of raising nearly $350,000 over two years for the budget from the families of some of the county's poorest residents by means of the county's lucrative jail phone contract with Evercom of Irving, Texas. The Champaign County Board is due to vote soon on renewing its jail phone service contract and can press for an improved visitation policy. |

The CD review that isn't |

The day that John Kerry conceded, I sat in a coffee shop, savoring the taste of espresso and the warmth of a sofa chair. Two tables away a college student ended a rather loud cell phone conversation (is there any other kind?) with a laugh, and then "Yeah, sore losers is what they are." He was, I surmised, referring to the demands for a recount in Ohio, the cries of foul play in our electoral system. It would have been very easy for me to dismiss him as too young to understand, duped by the corporate media, an indoctrinated sheep among sheep. But as I watched him sip his latte, I tried to imagine him as a friend, or a relative, or a co-worker. It was easy to despise him as a stranger, and much harder to imagine dismissing his words if they came from someone close to me. |

"On average, we make just one thousand dollars a year more than the custodial staff. The employees that mow the grass make three thousand a year more than we do."
Dorinda Miller, President of AFSCME Local 3700 said, "We don’t begrudge any worker a decent wage, we just want to make sure our predominantly female staff are equally compensated for the skills and knowledge they are required to have, not paid less because they are females." |

i was wondering if there would be any interest for a sexual consent workshop in c-u. i am going to be in champaign from the 23 of this month thru jan 3, not a real popular time, as i would guess most everyone is out of town. but it's worth a shot.
i am one of the facilitators for this workshop and would love to do it in c-u for obvious reasons. so, if anyone can think of a place to have this at or if you think people will attend or if you just want to know more about hysteria please email me. |

THREE JAIL SUICIDES IN CHAMPAIGN COUNTY |
by Sandra Ahten Email: spiritofsandra (nospam) hotmail.com |
13 Dec 2004
|
(Let’s Shed Some Light On It.)
Terrell Layfield killed himself at the Champaign County jail on Saturday, December 4th. This was the third suicide that has taken place within the walls of the Champaign County Jail in the last 6 months -- this compared to an overall state count of approximately 8 or 9 suicides per year - in total – in all city and county jails in Illinois. In other words if statistics for this year hold true. Champaign County will have had 30% of all jail suicides in Illinois. |
