Photos from AWARE-sponsored Veteran's Day event
My name is Robert Wahlfeldt. I was in the US Military during WWII from 1943-1946. I volunteered to go as a 17 year old who left high school early to avoid being drafted at 18. I joined the Navy and after boot camp was assigned to new construction destroyer duty. The USS Waldron. Our ship was sent to the South Pacific to join up with the Third and Fifth fast Carrier fleet as a picket ship since we had the new and latest radar equipment. We were placed at the perimeter of the task force as a lookout and to draw fire away from the rest of the fleet. We were expendable.
As a member of AWARE, Anti-War Anti-Racism Effort this former Navy man says, “NO MORE WAR!” Let's help the next generation find ways to work with the world in more positive ways. I plan to offer my life as an example that you are never too old to learn. Support our military by bringing them home now! |

The United States Government responded to a motion filed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center Foundation to lift the veil of secrecy surrounding the seizure of two Indymedia servers last month. The US Government claims that (1) the movants have no standing; (2) that the MLAT, as a treaty obligation, supersedes the law cited in the EFF/UCIMC motion; and, (3) that there is an ongoing investigation that needs to be kept secret. |

Scores of local community members took part in a hastily assembled Community Meeting and Social to discuss new projects, ideas, and strategies following the 2004 elections. Earlier in the evening community members rallied in the cold and rain at the corner of Race and Main Streets in downtown Urbana to demonstrate against the flawed American election system. Over a dozen projects were unveiled and discussed as people channeled their anger, their concern, and their disappointment -- vowing not to give up hope, lessen in their community engagement, or cease resisting discrimination and the diminution of our civil rights. |

On the evening of September 11, 2001 the Urbana-Champaign IMC held a community gathering of concerned residents to discuss fallout from the 9-11 terrorist attacks. Today, the Urbana-Champaign follows this tradition, bringing together our local community to organize, strategize, and resist. Come talk with friends, both old and new, and fight against the oppression, discrimination, and curtailing of basic human rights that the Bush Whitehouse has made a cornerstone of their administration.
Two events everyone should attend:
5pm RACE & MAIN STREET -- Downtown Urbana
6pm INDEPENDENT MEDIA CENTER -- 218 West Main Street |
