The rally to protest University's contract with Coca-Cola was a huge success.
Cacc_rally2.jpg
Coalition Against Coke Contracts [http://caccuc.blogspot.com/] hosted a rally on Tuesday, September 12, 2006. Close to a hundred people marched to Swanlund to tell the U of I administration to get rid of Coca-Cola. Amit Srivastava from India Resource Center[http://www.indiaresource.org/],
and Lori Serb addressed the rally.

Coca-Cola has an exclusive contract with University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The campaign against renewing the contract with Coca-Cola is growing everyday, with support from students, faculty, staff and community members.

This went very well. We got information out to people, and some more people signed onto our email list.

i am extremely aggravated at the tactics of Coca Cola Company. If the University of Michigan can place the Coca Cola Company on probation, why can't we? They need to clean up their act! The loss of lives and water pollution and deplation of resources in India are totally unacceptable. We cannot afford to support a company that resorts to these tactics all for some money gained through the exclusive Pouring Rights Contract.

I urge everyone to boycott Coca Cola. It will be less convenient to have to bring your own soda and other beverages to campus. We need to show them we will not buy their product. Then it will no lonbger be profotable to offer such contracts.

I have collected empty carton and bottle cap codes and entered them for premiums and discounts on merchandise, in an effort to make the company pay out more money. Now, the codes I collect will go toward a charitable cause. I did get some "free "Coca Cola Zero from this offer, but only at the company's expense. That is bad pop, as it contains Aspartame which is harmful and metabolizes to toxic methanol. I will not buy any more once this is gone.

Because soda is subject to the full 7.5% sales tax, originally levied to fund the 1992 Chicago World's Fair that never took place, I am collecting aluminum cans to recover the tax I had to pay, 9 cents for each of 21 bottles I redeemed from the Free Coke Zero 20 oz. bottle coupons I received from redemption of the bottle cap and carton points I collected from others' pop they consumed.
i am trying to cut down on soda now. I have sent for a rebate to get my money back on four cartons of Pepsi Cola I purchased recently at CVS Pharmacy.

i thought the rally was really informative and got the word out about some of the abuses coca cola is responsible, i look forward to hearing more about this in the future. Cut the Contract!

Its important to point out that this rally was not covered in the Daily Illini. I spoke to a DI reporter who was there but I would guess that the editors nixed the article.

Thank the heavens for independent media!

Couldn't agree more with BD.
Daily Illini doesn't really cover issues that are close to the community in Champaign-Urbana

Besides, Coca-Cola has enough money to make sure that the DI doesn't print it.

The DI did carry the story about two crazed homophobic black pseudo-ministers on campus yesterday.

FYI - the Public i, local newspaper of the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center, includes an article about the anti-coke campaign by Amit Srivastava. Its out on stands NOW!

Agree with BD that it is worth noting that the Daily Illini does not feel that it is worth their time to report on an issue that pertains directly to the univerity and its policies.
