La Colectiva is selling tamales to help further their work in support of comprehensive immigration reform, citizenship and voting.
Monday Sept 25, 11:30-2pm on the Quad, UIUC. |

(University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) The group that brought us massive rallies in support of comprehensive immigration reform last spring – La Colectiva – is busy again this fall, organizing voter registration, citizenship workshops, and this Monday September 25 a chance for everyone to pitch in and fill your tummy with yummy authenic Mexican tamales at the same time.
The tamale sale will run form 11:30-2pm on the UIUC Quad. Tamales are $1, or 3 for $2, and you can have hot chocolate or horchata (rice water) with your meal.
La Colectiva, an energetic group of Latina/o students from various parts of the US, meets every week (and sometimes twice a week) at La Casa Cultural Latina on campus. Meetings are open to anyone who wants to help. The next one is Wednesday September 20 at 7pm.
Last year the group pressed US Representative Tim Johnson on his support for draconian border police methods – the anti-immigrant lobbyists have been pushing for a wall between the US and Mexico, a crackdown on immigrants with minor documentation problems, etc. – and encouraged him to support comprehensive reform. La Colectiva in nonpartisan, and does not endorse candidates for office or political parties, but the group actively organizes around issues of justice. And they do it well.
This semester the group’s work centers on voter registration among new immigrant groups and on citizenship help. La Colectiva is registering anyone and everyone who is willing, but the focus is on students and newly naturalized citizens (Latino/a, Asian or other). The deadline for registering to vote in the November 7 election is October 10.
