8 Days of Sitting In at WashU, Take Action: Sit-In for Living Wage, Washington University in St. Louis
11 Apr 2005
WashUSitin2849.jpgThe following is from a student participating in the ongoing sit-in/occupation in the main administrative building of Washington University in St. Louis. The sit-in is in support of campus workers who do not currently receive a living wage. Currently the sit-in has been going on for 8 days (since April 4). Below this message is a list of ways you can take action and a summary of what we've been doing over the past 10 days.

Update: Word has just been received that Washington U has announced that the students must vacate the sit-in as of 11:30pm Monday evening. This update is posted as a comment to this article. For up-to-date info, check out the St. Louis IMC Newswire at http://stlouis.indymedia.org/

They must not have read "I, Robot": The military's robotic killing machine.
10 Apr 2005
talon_eod-robotsiraq2.jpg

In his groundbreaking novel "I, Robot," Isaac Asimov proproses three laws of robotics, the first one of which reads: "A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm." These laws are still bandied about by artificial intelligence researchers as a good starting point for an ethical foundation for guiding the design of robots that may some day think for themselves (see http://www.asimovlaws.com/ for a review). The idea is that technological advances are occurring so quickly that a moral groundwork needs to be laid before man destroys himself with his own technology. Apparently, the US military and the companies that design these killing machines for them don't see things the same way.

Sign the Petition: Dirty Money Out of Our Schools!
25 Mar 2005
Jay Bergman's money has come from business practices which have been proven to damage the environment of this state. Rather than conducting business in an environmentally responsible fashion, he chooses to eat the losses from the miniscule fines that are imposed and even dole out tens of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions. Rather than crying foul, the greedy politicians from both parties happily accept his money, and Illinois State University is essentially forced to do the same. Now, Rod Blagojevich has a choice: send Bergman packing, or send a message to this community that money is the only thing that matters. Sign the petition to get dirty money out of our schools.

Hundreds Protest in Downtown Champaign as War in Iraq Enters Third Year
20 Mar 2005
AWARE19March2005viaBenGrosser.jpgOn the second anniversary of the beginning of Bush's "preemptive" war of choice on Iraq, hundreds of local residents gathered on an afternoon only slighty warmer than a compassionate conservative's heart to protest the toll of Bush's war on Iraq and its people, on the youth of America, and on a national budget cut to the bone to finance the war and tax cuts for the wealthy.

No Money for College for Pot Smokers
14 Mar 2005
Did you know that Bill Clinton, (who smoked but didn’t inhale and was a Rhodes scholar), signed a bill which denies federal financial assistance to any student with a drug conviction, even for simple marijuana possession. This outrageous legislation is called the Higher Education Act Drug Provision. It could be repealed with your help.

WCIA Broadcasts Government Propaganda from Ag. Dept.
12 Mar 2005
In a detailed feature from today's New York Times about the use of covert propganda by the United States government through video news releases, WCIA is exposed as being party to a special relationship with the Agriculture Department in producing and airing segments on behalf of Department promotions and policies. WCIA News Director Jim Gee is extensively quoted in the article about these practices, which he defends. This exposure of WCIA's propaganda practices comes near the end of the extensive article, which exposes such practices across federal government departments and at television broadcasters throughout the nation. The excerpt about WCIA and a link to the full article comes after the jump.
