Caribbean students and their friends are hoping that Champaign Urbana residents will support a fundraising party to help rebuild islands that were devastaed by Hurricane Ivan and Tropical Storm Jeanne. |
On Thursday November 18 at Nargile nightclub, 207 West Clark St. Champaign, the West Indian Student’s Association will host a hurricane/storm relief party.
In September Hurricane Ivan destroyed 90 percent of the buildings in Grenada and decimated the island’s nutmeg and
tourism industries. In the same month Tropical Storm Jeanne caused flooding and mudslides in Haiti, killing over 1,500
people. UN Under-Secretary- General for Humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland has stated that Haiti needs more than 32 million
dollars and Grenada needs 27 milliondollars to begin the processes of rebuilding.
Caribbean students and their friends at the University of Illinois are hoping to do their part to help Grenada and Haiti. The party is the first in a series of fundraising ventures. Door proceeds will go to the hurricane/storm relief fund and further donations will also be accepted at a special booth set up in the Nargile lounge during the party. From 9pm the band Sandunga will be playing the music of Cuba and then at 10pm DJ Delayney and DJ Bris will take over playing the latest dancehall, soca/calypso, salsa, hip hop, reggae, meringue, R&B and bachata. |
