Anti-CIA Menus Handed Out at the Taste of the CIA Current rating: 0
16 Nov 2004
Taste of CIA flyer protest.

My partner Carol Inskeep and I handed out alternative "Menus" at the Taste of the CIA dinner and promotion event at the McKinley Center on the UI campus, Tuesday evening.
My partner Carol Inskeep and I handed out alternative "Menus" at the Taste of the CIA dinner and promotion event at the McKinley Center on the UI campus, Tuesday evening.
The menu is viewable as a Word document here:
21913_Taste_of_the_CIA2.doc
Taste of the CIA2.doc (244 k)
.

First we went into the main hall and began flyering, but were chased out by the people running the show. We then flyered on the sidewalk as people entered. The organizers of the event called the police who came and told us we could keep doing what we were doing. We handed out about 200 of the anti-CIA flyers.

If the CIA is ever doing a Taste of the CIA event in your area, feel free to use this flyer.

Makes You Wonder About People Who Are Still Hungry After They've Read the Menu
Current rating: 0

They have, how shall I say it, _strange_ tastes in morals and ethics, choice of people they associate with, the legacy they'll leave the world from their lives, and the ability to tell themselves that the lies/lives they live somehow make the world a better place.

Here's a bit of background on the 1954 Guatemala Coup (on the menu at a low, low $19.54).
http://www.newspoetry.org/1999/991226.html

The direct links to the original CIA docs that are referenced in the essay are mostly broken at this point due to what may be a deliberate churning of the CIA's FOIA website to give the CIA itself a presumptive lead on the interpretation of its own rather damning documents. Independent historians have to work harder because of this policy, intentionally obstructive or not. However, with a little effort, you can actually find them all by their document numbers at this link:
http://www.foia.cia.gov/guatemala.asp

Many sources of further info can be found in the bibliography.

Beautiful menu and tastefully done!

I was also at the McKinley Center, my pockets filled will leaflets "White House Orders CIA Shakeup to Get Rid of 'Soft Leakers and Liberal Democrats' from DemocracyNow.org, Nov. 15 2004.
I talked to students, circulated among the crowd, and tried to be generally disruptive.
McKinley authorities threatened to call police and then told me they were the most "liberal" church in town. Other "liberals" on the inside accused Paul Meuth and I that we were the reason conservatives hate us and we were the reason the election was lost!

Good to see other people there. But we all seemed to be there spontaneously, with little organized effort. What can we do to be better organized the next time?

The time of waiting is over, now is the time to GET INVOLVED.

PEACE BD

Colleen, Sarah, and I also attended the shindig, albeit late,--Looking as I do, the organizers were definately nervous simply by my presence!! Once we walked in the door Colleen said the well dressed older man (Head spook??) looking straight at me and said "Asshole!!!" or something. So, I just stood in the middle of the room silently, being as conspicuous as possible, and this was enough to have the desired effect. Whispers, stares, pointing, etc... so whenever someone looked at me, especially anyone well dressed and older, I made a point to make direct eye contact and smile "knowingly," which seemed to make some a bit nervous or self-concious. At one point one of the recruiters, the asian-american woman, made eye contact with me, so to test things out I smiled at her and started to walk over.... needless to say she avoided me like the plague and disappeared into a gaggle of yellow shirts. So, the pont of the story is this...

The enemy is not that big and they know it! If the silent presence of one "subversive" is enough to make them nervous, imagine what the effect of a silent vigil of 20 "subversives" would be. Which, of course they could do nothing about because like me all would have EVERY right to be present and just stand there. I tested it, and it worked.... so, just an idea for next time.

Matt and Carol, your menu is brilliant, so glad you passed them out. I just ran into Carol and she told me that the yellow shirts were telling people that they couldn't come in if they had your subversive material, Apparently they found them effective as well. The police suggested that the organizers were out of line in collecting the work of art at the entrance. .

I wished I had pushed my interaction a little further, as the police seemed to be more aware of citizen's rights than the Advertising Professor, who organized the student marketing group IntUItion He seemed be the main enforcer on the scene. Likely the guy who David P refered to ..

He and his minions we the ones who were to call the police on me to prevent me from recording the event.

They had horrible PA sound, so I asked to be escorted to the front, so I wouldn't be regarded as disruptive, as I had already been typecasted as same. At this time, I was told that recording was prohibited, despite the fact that J-school students were very visibly doing videography in the crowd earlier.
Later upon being interviewed by these latino students from UI-7 cable, they told me that they had been told they could interview but could not record the events on stage.

After being told that I could not audo tape, I proceed to the front anyway. The Korean American CIA presenter stopped speaking and said she couldn't continue whilst being recored because she didn't know how the document would be used.
This was when I was threatened with the police call, and I pretty much desisted .. .

I did argue a bit with the advert prof, he wanted my press credentials, to which I responded that a private citizen should be able to record a public official at a public event ..

He said it was a class event . ". that advertises in the papers"

This seems to be the same fellow who approached a young guy who was making notes on an old laptop as to whether he was a reporter, he said he wasn't, which makes me wonder what he would have done if the answer was in the affifirmative.

Regarding my being typecasted as rude, prior to the event beginning on stage, I asked for a show of hands as to those who regarded the CIA as a criminal organization. Upon being referred as rude from the stage after the event did begin, I did reiterate that no proceedings had begun when I polled the crowd.

and it was a diappointing large crowd, apparently wanting to be a " hero with the Cia!"

Goss Tells CIA Employees: Support Bush Policies
This news from the CIA. Just days after Newsday reported that the White House had ordered a purge of Bush critics within the CIA, the agency's new head Porter Goss has told employees that their job is to "support the administration and its policies." In the memo, Goss said "As agency employees we do not identify with, support or champion opposition to the administration or its policies."

I'd been tempted to show up and just ask a lot of stupid questions, without being openly subversive. This would have been more effective with more people doing the same thing. Unfortunately, though, I couldn't make it. :(

Note - before engaging in petty personal attacks and calling people STUPID, you might do a spell check first.

Your menu is creative and effective and speaks the truth about the CIA. Now more than ever we must protest against anti-democratic tactics used against innocent people worldwide. The peace of the world is at stake.

"if we were only nice, know would hurt us"

Again, son, do a spell check before trying to appear smart.

Perhaps what you meant to say is that "knowledge" would hurt us.

Indeed - who is Pinochet?
Who was on the CIA payroll?
THINK about it.

Criminals In Action.

All of you who attended the event and protested the event failed to understand the true meaning of the event.

There was a great crowd there, of hard working students whom were approaching graduation and yet to determine what career path they wanted to choose. Students who have worked their asses off for four or more years to get to the point they are at... and all they want is a job. I am sure most of you want new jobs... its a tough market out there.

Perhaps the CIA could be a potential employer? Perhaps you could have given these students the respect they deserved to hear about a career they could pursue.... a chance to start earning a living, and begin a path to other future goals.

Do you know what the target market of the event was? Students who speak more than one language... so clearly the CIA wants americans who can speak spanish and want to kill and lie.... clearly.

Its like you all really thought the CIA was there to recruit liars and killers.... but there was no recruiting. It was no different than any other job fair out there. Do you protest the job fairs when phillip morris comes because they are recruiting people to potentially make cigarettes? I doubt it.

Before you go crazy next time and make fools of yourself, why not contact the class advertising the event and ask them what they are really doing? You would have found the event was geared to be far more positive than you originally thought. Don't jump to conclusions and try to be respectful.

And for Paul, you were rude. There was no open floor to discuss who likes or dislikes the CIA. You deserved to be kicked out from the event, especially after the scene you created when you went back up to the floor.

And if you want an alternate way to complain, maybe write a letter... I'll even give you a stamp.

P.S. I forgot to spell check... make fun of me. Maybe you should incluide a spell check function on your message boards if you so badly desire one.

As I pointed out, I asked to be escorted to the front .. this is when I was told the event was not to be recorded.

Why is a public event by a government official above documentation?

PS I think demos against recruitment by criminal corporations are certainly in order, and they should be able to be recorded as well. . .
Great job and exactly the respect they deserve

I'm not kidding. Telling someone the truth is respectful of their intelligence and ability to make up their own minds. Anything less is patronizing.

And, RB, nobody has time to protest every wrong, not even you.

The Supreme Court has decided that military recruiting on University campuses is illegal, due to the military's ongoing discrimination against gays and lesbians.

In Philadelphia, organizers have taken over a military recruiting office and converted it into a homeless shelter.

What about occupying the Armory Bldg, converting it into a homeless shelter, and geting Food Not Bombs folks to serve hot meals?
