Urbana School Board Meeting Turns Surreal |
by Faith Swords & Sascha Meinrath |
08 Apr 2003
|
Today the newly elected Urbana School Board was officially seated. However, events were anything but "normal". Front-runner Carol George (who won the popular election) stepped down from her position as the new School Board member from the second sub-district as the newly elected members were being asked to take their oath of office (but after they had been recognized by the existing School Board). No one on the School Board was entirely sure how to proceed and what followed was an interesting experiment in "covering the bases" proceedurally.
The current make-up of the School Board is now:
Sub-district 1. Joyce Hudson -- 4 yr term
Sub-district 2. Jerry Moreland -- 4 yr term
Sub-district 3. Ruth Ann Fisher -- 2 yr term
Sub-district 4. Cope Cumpston -- 2 yr term
Sub-district 5. Mark Netter -- 2 yr term
Sub-district 6. Steve Summers -- 4 yr term
Sub-district 7. John Dimit -- 4 yr term |

King's Legacy: Americans Must Choose Between War And Social Progress |
by Mark Weisbrot |

In Memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, taken from us too soon, April 4, 1968
The level of domestic greed deemed acceptable during wartime has reached hitherto unheard of proportions. A cartoon by Mike Keefe of the Denver Post summed it up: two American soldiers are staggering through a sandstorm in the Iraqi desert, and one says to the other, "It could be worse -- we could be rich and only getting half the tax cut we expected." |

Progressive Voices Win In C-U |
by Ida |

Yesterday's election was a victory for racial equity and progressive values in Champaign-Urbana. Cope Cumpston won the School Board race in Urbana against incumbent Tina Gunsalus by a slim 25 vote lead in a vigorous race to the finish line. Giraldo Rosales secured one of the three available seats on the Champaign City Council. Progressive Ken Urban ran an intense grassroots campaign and came in fourth out of six candidates. And two years after stanch conservatives unseated progressive Margie Skirvin on the Champaign School Board, Skirvin is back in the seat along with Nathaniel Banks, who ran a strong race and came in second. Progressives were concerned that Jim McGuire would win a School Board seat, but McGuire came in fifth, trailing Skirvin by over 600 votes. |

3/20 - Campustown Erupts In Protest |

On the day after War on Iraq began, students, faculty, and residents of Champaign-Urbana took part in the biggest local Anti-War demonstration since the Vietnam War era.
I think that Thursday, March 20th will go down as an important day in the history of C-U peace activism!
The noon rally was fantastic: a superb speaker list that was topped off by a surprise visit by the legendary Jello Biafra. You simply can't beat that.
Then, the peace community successfully heeded the call for civil disobedience throughout the country.
