Dear Sascha Meinrath,

Are there any news sources where your people can go that will state emphatically that Iraq is actually winning? I sense our overwhelming victory is making alot of your readers cranky.

Thanks,

Jack

HELP TO SAVE AL JAZEERA!!!
Current rating: 3
27 Mar 2003
Modified: 12:55:40 PM
On March 24th, at approximately 10:30 EST, the Arab Nation's news station, Al Jazeera, posted a report that it had been under attack recently by hackers reportedly from the United States. It was at the precise moment that Al
Jazeera offered its reports in ENGLISH on the net,
that it was attacked and the web page was no longer
made available. It was presumed by Al Jazeera
that these hackers were ordered by the United States
government or the CIA to limit access to their web
cites because they offer a drastically different
account of events in Iraq than CNN or other
western/corporate news channels. For example, Al
Jazeera reporters tend to actually report civilian
casualties as they happen, and they have also
questioned the U.S.'s hold on Om Qasser, the Iraqi
51st regimine's surrender to the U.S. forces, and the
"uprise" of the Basrawi people (I am in contact with
my partner's Mother and brother in Basra, and they have
confirmed Al Jazeera, NOT CNN's version of the
stories). It is imperiative that freedom of the
press and freedom of information be kept intacked. It
is imperiative that we MAKE NOISE and show that:

1. WE HAVE NOTICED! The American people are aware of
the fact that the news source of Al Jazeera is no
longer available to us and we want it back (and you
Mr/Ms rep/sen should do something)! Traffic MUST be
allowed to WWW.ALJAZEERA.NET and ENGLISH.ALJAZEERA.NET

2. WE BELIEVE IN FREEDOM OF THE PRESS! Even during war
the American people have the right to know what is
going on. It is obvious that military positions or
other information that compromises lives should not be
reported, but barring that, we deserve truth in
reporting - AND alternate sources of that truth (and
you Mr/Ms rep/sen should protect that right).

3. WE DEMAND AN INVESTIGATION! We want to know (and
you, Mr/Ms rep/sen should want to know) who took the
news source of Al Jazeera away from the American
public and why they did so.

4. Finally, THIS IS NOT A REPLACEMENT! We are not
really happy with the news coverage that is available
to us. We will continue (and you, Mr/Ms rep/sen
should) pressure CNN, Fox, and all other
western/corporate news channels to provide accurate,
balanced, non-biased and FAIR reports of events,
whether during wartime or not.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take a moment to call your
Senators and make the above points. You don't have to be perfect or articulate - the important thing is that you talk. Dial 1015200 and then the number for a $0.05 per minute deal - you don't even have to have long distance on your phone if you dial that first!

House of Rep and Senate operator: 1-202-224-3121 (it is very busy so it is much better for you to dial the direct telephone number of your reps and senators. You can obtain these numbers by going to www.congress.gov and putting in your zip code).

If you don't know what district you're in you could a.
call one of the representatives and tell them your zip code to see if you're in their district, if you're not, they'll probably connect you to your person. or b. go to
www.house.gov or clerk.house.gov to put in your zip
code and presto!

Finally, the white house opinion line (totally cute
receptionists who are sooooo friendly - takes 2 min)
is 1-202-456-1111 or fax 1-202-456-2461

THE NEXT MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU COULD POSSIBLY DO -
is forward this message to anyone you know out of
state! Everyone has a cousin living in Idaho! Send
this to her! That dude you took the e-mail address of
when you stayed at that youth hostel in Seattle? Send
this to him!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

www.stratfor.com is pretty level-headed and they have a pay-based service on the Iraq War that updates and collects sources including many from the links above. If you can afford it, it's worth it.

www.irna.com...Yes it's the Iranian News Agency but they provide decent information. Go to the headline section.

http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/...Chinese news service

www.debka.com...If you sort through some of the hype, this group out of Israel gets it right many times...

In the end, the group that has done the most accurate reporting is the folks in Russia at #16 above.

No one source can be relied on, of course, but this much is for certain--Without the Net and access to IndyMedia and combat journalists like Fisk of the Independent and the foreign press, we'd be completely at the mercy of the war machine. It's so sad that the US is hacking Al Jazeera. The bloody pictures they show should be shown and all should be made to view them. That is war. If we in the US had to see those images each and every day, not only from the Iraq War, but from violence coming from the War on Drugs in US cities and in Central/South America, from violent crime in American cities--which claims 126,000 lives every 3 years, and the pictures of horrid poverty in the USA, Americans might try harder to force their government and corporations to pursue peace and distribute wealth.

Anyway, sorry for the rant and thanks for centralizing these sources.

I bought a shortwave radio like the people behind the iron curtain did when they didn't have a free press.
I've hear the truth about how people are feeling around the world.
I listened to Radio China (In English) and if their oil gets cut off,and because they have no reserve they have talked about interviening in the war.
The Russian radio doesn't call this a war.
They call it the United States aggression.
Germany and France are considering forming thier own military alliance so they don't have to listen to the US anymore.
If you listen to the chicken hawk news in the US you're not getting the full story.
There are other ways to protest than get in the street.
You can just stop using your credit card.
That will help.
You can get a shortwave radio and bypass the corporate media alltogether.
If you're bypassing the US media you can send them a message by cancelling cable, and dish servie.
And you can write the corporate media and tell them what you think of their fine coverage.
According to the carefully worded polls they take, you all love this war while the world cringes in revulsion in regard to more stellar foriegn policy.
Sure !
What can the general population say?
Our beloved soldiers have been taken hostage by a miscalculated operation put together by warhawks that want to whip up a nice frothy bloodlust to make the world safer for the WTO
and cronie capitalists so they can sell more weapons, and "security"around the powderkeg we call the world.

Here are a couple sample letters for you to get an idea on how to write your own letters to the corporate"press".
Just tell them how you feel about thier involvement.
You don't have to threaten anyone,or swear.
Just tell them how ridiculos they appear.

I bet you like the ratings you're getting. As far as you're concerned the attack must be a real bonanza. I like all the smiling faces you provide and the phony regret. It's a modern miracle of marketing.
Thats real Disney know how.
Congratulations for taking an issue that sends the rest of the world into revulsion, and make it look like just another sunny day.
  Great Job Mouseketeers!
Just wanted to let you know I bought a shortwave radio, and I totally bypass the vomit your company spews.
I feel a whole lot better sine I got off of your sugary syrupy diet of reconstituted oversanitized Peter Pan programming laced with sexy and perverse ideologies.
No more commercial media slop for me.
  Ever hear of Jeff Rense?
http://www.rense.com
He's really entertaining, and professional in his delivery.
He's not mentally ill enough to be a Mouseketeer though.
He's about as commercial as I get nowadays.
Thanks for helping me stop watching TV.
It's a waste of time, and ABC progamming is one I found particularly revolting so you deserve most of the credit.
All the way from "GMA,and that egocentric Oprah, down to Burbra Walters the paranoid nutcase.
Lets not forget what you perverts think is "entertaining"....scantily clad teenage girls who are secret agents, and sexy people contests,or God only knows what other perverse shows you've been running since I gave up on TV.
I'm writing tonight because there is a show from the 60's I'd never seen thats on an obscure UHF station out here I tape to watch in primetime.... thats fun to watch because it's still new to me.
You would never run it because it has morals, and is inoffensive. It wouldn't come in tonight, and I stumbled upon your silly in-bed-ed
"news"casters ...Hahaha
The vile Cynthia McFadden was one of the puppets babbling your misguided spew when I was going through the channels to check my antenna.
I thought ...hey,I should let ABC know how I feel about thier programming, after being ABC(or any "mainstream junk media")crap-free and off of it for a couple of months.
  I feel great.
I get my news from around the world.
Just like the people behind the iron curtain used to. When you want to know who the "sexiest"person alive ? Which I never do...
Or the All American Sexiest Girl....?
I guess the perverts at ABC is the place to be huh? You people just have no idea how to run a
major media outlet.

 Give Up !
 You Suck.
My advice is you put the place up for sale, and give someone with morals ,who will hire credible journalists a chance.
You're wasting the airwaves, and making the US look bad.
===
Later in the morning I switched past ABC and saw a fanciful Charlie Gibson interveiwinng a bunch of girls in really low riser"sexy"shorts, and scanty little crop top "US" uniforms, and beret's dancing a sexy little routine to entertain the troops in Kosovo on GMA right after he had a "serious"talk with a Military Industrial Complex spokesperson.

===
Hi!
I just saw Tom Brokaw making a profit for NBC in regard to the BLOG story at the end of the news.
I thought it was sickening that he so nonchalanty stated why people are writing BLOG's.
Because they don't trust the corporate media. Which is HIM!
I can only stand a few minutes of this corporate flotsum you produce. I bought a shortwave radio a few months ago,and I get my news from
around the world in order to hear a glimmer of truth. Thank God I don't have to listen to your sanitized corporate
double-talk any more.
Now I have to get my news just like the people did when they were behind the iron curtain.
Thank you again for stealing our free press. Everyone knows the corporate media cannot be trusted, you are only in it
for the money.
You take this "war"which is actually an unprovoked attack that the rest of the world is cringing in revulsion over, and pretend to make it honorable.
Shame on you for helping to destroy the credibility of my beautiful country, and our soldiers, who should be at home protecting us.
How much money are you making with all the "coverage"? I bet it's a real cash bonanza jackpot for you and your arms merchants
bosses.
It's so obvious that G.E. is both a arms merchant, and media outlet working hand in hand to sell your weapons of death to a captive US audience.
Congratulations on whipping up bloodlust in the world. I hope you get nice and rich on your blood money. Moving out some old stock on the weaponry you produce?
Taxpayers are forced to pay for the old stuff wheter they want to or not, with tax dollars, and the blood of thier sons and daughters in the military,so G.E. can bring out the 2004 line of arms !
  It's a win-win situation for you.
So glad to see _someone_ enjoying the mayhem. May God have mercy on the people who work for your destructive decepitve conglomerate.
(I hope that doesn't offend you....you probably don't have anyone who works for you that believes in God.It sure doesn't look like it from my end of the screen)

i noticed your frontpage has removed the classic 'add your comments' link from some stories. this is a pathetic loss of civilized behavior. without debate there can be no resolution of any kind to anything. your diatribe about 'misrepresented protestor counts' and so forth is pathetic, because you yourself have posted wildly over-enthusiastic numbers with no reference to method used for counting, etc. your SF count was WAY off. i am so sick of this shit. you are no different from hannity, limbaugh, savage, and the other brainless morons puppeting whatever they can think of as long as it supports their side of the issue, which of course, is the only right side and so they can justify anything they do by saying they 'had no choice, look what they were up against'.

the first casualty of war is truth,,,,, just because you are 'not corporate' doesnt mean you are escaping this little homily.

the evil in the world is not only 'corporatism', it is elitism. it is anyone who is afraid to talk to those who disagree with them. it is hunkering down and claiming you are just 'defending yourself', when all you are really doing is hiding from criticism and giving yourself some kind of free-for-all platform where nobody can challenge your hegemony. if you cant criticise yourself and admit your own mistakes, then me, and 99% of the planet, will have no faith in you.

turmeric,
I'm not quite sure what you're talking about when you say, "i noticed your frontpage has removed the classic 'add your comments' link from some stories..." You certainly added your comments, although they seem to be a bit off the wall.

You mention something about SF IMC, so maybe you don't realize that our IMC runs on different software than there. Unlike there, there is not a "add comment" link after every comment, just one "add comment" for each article, at the top. Since you seem to be rather media-impaired, or as they say back home "one sixpack short of a full case," I thought I'd point that out for you. Just like at other IMCs, you can post comments on every story on the Newswire and on Features, too.

If your rant was percipitated by your misapprehension of our comment feature here, I hope this pleases you. And if you were just looking to blow off steam, that was pretty lame.

Al-Jazeera (which I read every day along with all the other online papers in order to excavate a balanced view from all the crap that is out there) is the Middle Eastern version of Time Magazine. It is as crammed with propaganda as our (American) papers are and completely useless if you want some real info. I find Albawaba a much better and less distorted source. I also read Haaretz and The Guardian (UK). Google's front page is great because it gives you access to tons of sources. Unless you only want to read your own opinions over and over again, then you should just stick to indymedia.org

«What are the Arabs really saying?»

Read it in Italian on Aljazira.it, here, every second and fourth Sunday of the month, you will find a selection of translations from Arabic - articles, cartoons and essays from the most authoritative Arab media. A way to cross the great language gap which cuts you off from the southern shore of the Mediterranean, from the Middle East and from the Gulf...

Aljazira.it translates directly from Arabic to Italian : without going through English or French, Aljazira.it invites you to discover the richness and variety of the Arab world, a lot of which is still hidden behind the sand dunes of tourist brochures and the veils of our press...

...who are we?

Aljazira.it is an informal group of qualified translators from Arabic, scholars and experts on the Arab and Islamic world.

...so why Aljazira?

In Arabic, "the island" (or "the peninsula"), al-Jazira in ancient times was the fertile peninsula between the Tigris and the Euphrates and the Euphrates which we call Mesopotamia.

Today, this word means the Arabic peninsula, and is one of the most frequently used words in the Gulf countries for the names of banks, daily newspapers and TV stations...

Plenty of propaganda on the surface, but brings links to articles of more credible media:
www.middleeast.org

Thank you for your effort

PS. the list is wonderful, but please!!!
1. get it organized
2. Spread to active student groups round US universties, make some swapping(exchange) system with other organizations etc. In other words spread sorted information. This is the way to get the Bushist regime down without millions killed.
