CU Women Bare Witness For Peace. |

Champaign-Urbana, IL - 26 January 2003 - A group of women from central Illinois felt compelled to use the shock of their naked bodies to send a message to the world that the women of America's heartland oppose a US-led war against Iraq. Rather than staying warm at home, they went out into below-freezing temperatures to be vulnerable for peace. Lying on a freshly snow-covered ground with sub-zero wind chills, they linked together to form the word "PEACE." |

Reflections On DC Peace Protest: The Glamorous Life Of An Anti-War Protestor |
by Meridith Email: bmmk (nospam) soltec.net |
20 Jan 2003

Friday morning I awake before dawn. In the dark I struggle to find the light, turn off the alarm, and pack together some final necessities - extra long underwear, some snack bars, and my sleeping bag.
Then the thirteen-hour drive to DC began. The roads were mostly clear, with only short patches of snow and ice at nighttime through the mountains of West Virginia. When we arrived at the Church Mildred, a grandmother who was also caring for her grandchildren that night, made sure we all had warm spots to sleep on carpeted floors or gymnastics mats and nourished us with complementary food and drink. It seemed important for her to let us know that members of mainline churches were vehemently opposed to the war and wanted to physically support those of us who would take to the streets to protest the next day. |

Labor Hour Rant: The REAL Class War |
by Bill Gorrell |
13 Jan 2003
|
As you know, wealthy and wannabe wealthy people of Limbaugh's ilk claim that progressive income tax systems don't make people pay their fair share for a society that provides them with opportunities to make loads of money. No, instead, the ditto heads believe that their wealth comes from hard work, thus, people in the top tax bracket are the hardest working people in America. Using that logic, Bill Gates is the hardest working person in the world. Man, if Bill Gates works that much harder than I do, he does the equivalent of running about a thousand jackhammers twenty-five hours a day, eight days a week! |

Gov. Ryan Commutes Death Sentences |
by Paul Riismandel Email: paul (nospam) mediageek.org |
11 Jan 2003
|
This afternoon Illinois Governor George Ryan commuted the death senteces of all current death row prisoners, changing them to life in prison.
In a speech today Ryan said:
"We had executed 12 people since capital punishment was reinstated here in Illinois in 1977. With the 13th exonerated inmate in January of 2000, we had released more innocent men from Death Row than those hopefully guilty people we had executed.
Three years ago, I described it as a shameful scorecard. Truly shameful. So I did the only thing I could. I called for what is in effect a moratorium.
A lot of people called that courageous. . . . It wasn't. It was just the right thing to do. . . ." |

On Tuesday, January 21st, I'll be going to a meeting at the
Offices of Congressman Johnson. About 20 of us will gather
and ask that Congress push President Bush to commit to the UN process and let the inspections work. We'll also be delivering a petition from hundreds of thousands of Americans with the same message: "Let the Inspections Work."
Visit MoveOn.Org to and sign up to attend this community meeting with Representative Timothy Johnson at 12:30 on Tuesday, January 21st. We need to make our voices heard. |

Memories Of The Octopus And How To Fill The Void |
by Sandra Ahten Email: spiritofsandra (nospam) hotmail.com |
07 Jan 2003
|
As a former Octopus employee and current contributor to the Public i I contempate the past and future of alternative newspapers in C-U.
The many times that the Octopus was about to close I was always sad for the potential loss, but I also felt it was possible that the closing would make an opening for something better. I still believe that.
Is the Public i that "something" better? Perhaps a coalition between the Public i, WEFT and the IMC Website. I don't know. A group of dedicated citizen journalist- editors have been producing the Public i, a true community newspaper, for two years. It has grown from 4,000 to 5,000 copies printed with each run. It has grown from 8 to 12 pages per issue. It has changed from a model that mimicked corporate owned newspaper structure with a steady editor and clearly defined sections to newspaper that is collectively shaped, edited, proofed, and distributed. We have rotating editors and guest editors. I am part of that collective. You would not believe how peaceful and productive our meetings are. We produce a compelling paper with little or no angst these days - though we've had our share in the past. I'm afraid of what the closing of the CU Cityview will mean to the Public i. It seems we are just getting on a roll. Is bigger better? Is more often better? Should we even attempt to fill the hole left by the closing? If so, what part of the hole should we fill? The arts and entertainment void? The community calendar void?
There are many questions to consider. Thankfully, as we answer them we will have one consideration in mind -- what is best for the community. The community includes those who are doing the work and the readers. If you would like to have input -- you are welcome to attend the next meeting of the Public i.

Corporate media's tactics and immediate dismissal of CU Cityview staff calls for comunity action!
Champaign, IL -- Friday, January 3, 2003 --
The staff writers of the CU Cityview arrived at work today to find the locks changed on the Cityview office doors, and a posted memo stating that the newspaper was shut down. One day earlier, Saga Communications officers called staff editors and administrators into an unscheduled 4pm meeting, gave out press releases telling of the paper's demise, and then told everyone to go home. No prior notice about the paper's closure was given to the staff of the CU Cityview. |
