Sixteen months after the September 11 attacks, thirty six people attended today's weekly meeting of AWARE, the Anti-War, Anti-Racism Effort. A wide range of activities were discussed, showing that the group remains active and committed to stopping Bush's rush to war(s).
* Sending a delegation to the national anti-war protests in Washington, DC next weekend. Currently 35 people are traveling with AWARE, and 15 others are going independently. AWARE is coordinating lodging, food, and travel, and financial aid is available. The group is leaving from the Illini Union at 8:30 on Friday morning (a send-off will take place at 8 a.m.--Please show up!). Contact Charlotte Green for more information.
* Martin Luther King Day anti-war events are being planned. In addition to his civil rights work, King was a well-known peace advocate. Letters explaining King's position and offering informational materials were sent to dozens of religious leaders. Information will also be distributed at community events. Help is needed! Contact Peter Rohloff (rohloff (at) uiuc.edu) for more info.
* Assistance for targeted internationals: Ashcroft/Bush/the INS have implemented a new registry for people from 22 "mostly Muslim" nations (note: Saudi Arabia, the contry from which nearly all of the 9-11 highjackers came, was not on the original list of nations). Concerned faculty at UI have met with the Vice Chancellor for International Affairs and with Chancellor Cantor to ensure that the rights of these newly targeted people will be protected. In a meeting with profs Al Kagan and Susan Davis, Cantor agreed to set up a legal aid fund for people targeted by the INS who need aid (contributions are voluntary, and AWARE made a $100 contribution to the fund). She also agreed to ensure that accurate information is distributed, to contact Sen. Dick Durbin and encourage him to slow or stop the process of racially targeting international visitors, and to form a monitoring group. http://www.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=227803&group=webcast
* Weekly anti-war demonstrations continue near the big box stores on north Prospect Ave. This past week, 43 people attended the action, 7 of whom were new to the group. They are struggling to keep the right to communicate with passers-by. A legal opinion from the city says that they may continue handing leaflets to stopped cars, but police show up and tell protesters that they must stop. The police say demostrators are disrupting traffic, but only Channel 3 reporters and the police cars parked in the street disrupt traffic, according to reports at the meeting.
* Efforts to stop military recruiting at the Cunningham Children's home is underway. Robert Dunn met with the director of the home, who is now considering allowing alternative points of view to be presented to residents of the home.
* Actions on the day the war begins will take place both at UI and off-campus. Student Peace Action has gathered commitments from students to not attend regular classes but instead attend a teach-in at Lincoln Hall on the day that Bush begins attacking Iraq. Community members are encouraged to attend that event or go to West Side Park in Champaign, where another anti-war gathering will be held.
* A meeting with US Rep Tim Johnson is scheduled for Monday, January 20 at 12:30 p.m. All war opponents are encouraged to attend. (Come to next week's AWARE meeting to confirm the details.)

I'm a little unsure what crossing one's legs "says" except "this is the way I comfortably sit." But setting aside the silly implicit homophobia of your post, I thought I'd clear something up...the "guy" on the far right is a woman.

I thank you for your coiurageous efforts to oppose war and stand up for Peace. It is the combined voices and efforts of each one of us that will have to be heard in this loud clamour for War and ignorance about the real human needs, both here and around the World. |
