Saw You In Springfield. And You. And You.
03 Nov 2002
What went down when George Bush stumped for local candidates in Springfield.

I was lucky enough to get together a few like-minded individuals who wanted to go show the Illinois GOP what we thought of their war plans, and so off we went, through the rain and sleet to Springfield.

I don't know about you, but every time I visit Springfield, I look at the people passing by and I wonder which ones are the power-brokers, the ones I believe to be responsible for so much of what goes wrong in the state.

"A Set-up For Failure: Racial Inequality In Education" -- National Radio Show Highlights Racial Inequities In Champaign Public Schools
02 Nov 2002
It's been almost a half century since the U.S. Supreme Court made the landmark Brown verses Board of Education decision, essentially ending legalized segregation in schools. Great progress was made in the Southeastern United States and other regions of the country during the 1960s and 1970s. But, a series of subsequent Supreme Court decisions in the 1990s and shifts in education policy at the federal, state, and local levels, have led to a trend that some observers are describing as "resegregation." On this edition of Making Contact, we take a look at racial inequality in public education.

Marisellis Brown For Illinois Governor?
01 Nov 2002
Quick - name the candidate on the Illinois ballot for governor who is an African-American Vietnam War veteran with a Purple Heart, grew up in public housing and always signs "political prisoner" following his name. If you guessed "Marisellis Brown, of Danville" you know how to read between the lines of the official press, which has effectively buried any news of the independent's candidacy.

Corporations Pool 5 Million To Kill GMO Labelling Ballot Initiative
31 Oct 2002
Oregon may soon become the first state to require labels on genetically engineered food. A ballot initative, known as Measure Twenty Seven, would require food producers to label genetically engineered ingredients in food produced or sold in Oregon. 70% of food sold in the state would be affected. The labelling measure has been fought by food and biotechnology companies such as Monsanto, Dupont, General Mills, and Pepsi, calling themselves the Coalition Against the Costly Labelling Law. The campaign has spent over five million dollars, outspending labeling advocates 25 to 1. (4 min. audio and full transcript)

Champaign School Board Closes Hearings -- General Public Ordered To Leave The Building
30 Oct 2002
Two days of hearings have been called by the Champaign School Board; the decision to remove Assistant Superintendent Deloris Henry appears to be a foregone conclusion. On Tuesday evening, the School Board ordered a recess of proceedings and refused to continue the hearings until the general public left the building. Community activists are asking the general public to exercise their right to witness and document the actions of this public body by showing up at this evening's meeting -- 6:30p.m. at the Mellon Administrative Building.

No Respect At NBC
28 Oct 2002
Illinois Democratic Candidate for Governor, Rod Blagojevich supports Telemundo employees who are seeking union representation and respect by NBC for their decision to join a union.

While anti-war demonstrations took place on Saturday, October 26th across the country and around the world in major cities, including Chicago, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) held a rally for respect in front of NBC Towers in Chicago, protesting the inequality at NBC against Telemundo Broadcasters who have recently become employees of NBC. Over 200 people rallied and chanted both in English and Spanish: "What do we want? Justice! When do we want it? Now!", In spanish: "Si, se puede!" ("We can do it!"), "El pueblo unido, Jamas sera vencido"("The people united, will never be defeated"), In English: "Respect!", "2,4,6,8 NBC Discriminates" and "2,4,6,8 NBC Negotiate!" A Telemundo truck drove by honking in support for the rally.

Palestinian Truth Tour
28 Oct 2002
Reaction to the Event at the IDF last Friday Night, from the perspective of an elementary school teacher!

Friday night I attended an event held at the Illinois Disciples Foundation at the corner of Springfield and Wright, Champaign titled "The Palestinian Truth Tour." The two speakers (U.S. citizens) had just returned from Israel and the Occupied territory and specifically the Jenin Refugee camp. The 2 are part of the International Solidarity Movement.
