A Call for Witnesses - Prevent Courtroom Lynching in Champaign County
24 Jun 2006
The malicious re-proscecution of Patrick Thompson, one of the "Cop Watch" videographers from 2004, reconvenes this week. COME WITNESS CHAMPAIGN COUNTY IN/JUSTICE THIS WEDNESDAY, July 5th at 9 AM in Courtroom A. Community Courtwatch is calling all community members to help witness this trial. We are concerned the jury will, once again, be all white and from rural "sundown towns." Patrick is facing prison time if found guilty of charges with NO EVIDENCE, NO WITNESSES, NO INVESTIGATION. To have true justice, we must not tolerate corruption in our justice system.

Boycott Firehaus!
Bar/Restaurant condones harassment of anti-war customer by drunken bar patron.

...A drunken bar patron cornered me and began hurling epithets at me for wearing a tshirt in opposition to the war, following me to my table. When I reported the bar patron's conduct to the manager, I was simply told that this customer was a regular and that there was nothing the bar was willing to do. The hostile and threatening actions by the bar patron would not have been considered appropriate behavior under any other circumstance; however, I believe that because the patron was directing his epithets at me for wearing an anti-war tshirt, the manager consented and refused to remove the drunken patron from the bar.

Champaign Votes Yes by 5 to 3 to Pursue a New Community TV Station
10 May 2006
Champaign Council voted 5-3 in favor or supporting the pursuit of a community operated, public access Community TV Station in the next franchise agreement. That franchise process begins with Insight Communications this year and would likely run for 15-20 years.

The vote was expected to fail, but over 50 supporters of public access packed council chambers and this appeared to sway the outcome. In addition, presenters from the C-U Telecommunications Commission and Public Access Study group urged council members not to vote public access down before the franchise negotiation process gets started.

A majority of council members appeared to support the concept of the Community TV station, but differed over how to fund it. This report provides details of the meeting as well as transcript-like notes from public input and each councilmember's statements.

Champaign City Staff Aims to Torpedo New Public Access TV Channel
07 May 2006
This Tuesday, May 9th at 7PM, the Champaign City Council will consider the future of Public Access Cable TV in our community. And although there has been considerable community support building over the past two years for the creation of a new, dedicated Public Access Cable TV channel, the Champaign city administration is mounting a surprise 11th-hour effort to dissuade the Champaign City Council from providing any support for Public Access Cable TV for perhaps the next 15 years. Instead, they are proposing a substantial funding increase to equip and staff the government-only cable channel they already run, which has no public access. A strong public turnout will be necessary at Tuesday's meeting in order to ensure community efforts to establish a new Public Access TV channel are not dashed by Champaign's city staff.
