Robert Vickrey and The Burking of Liberal Education at the University of Illinois
11 Aug 2006
New "Global Campus" initiave does away with faculty input, distribution requirements

While the Global Campus final report does worry that offering online education might hurt the Univeristy of Illinois "Brand", there is no consideration as to what might be lost by the abandonment of the traditional idea of liberal education. Yet if there's "there is no room for programs not based on real needs and interests" on the Global Campus, then presumably there's no need for such programs at the bricks and mortar campus, either. Under its current leadership, we must fear that U of I may face a long-term decline in the quality of those offerings which are not the most immediately profitable.

Continuance Granted in Trial of Black Civil Rights Activist
08 Aug 2006
thompson-prayer.jpgA growing crowd of over 50 supporters sat behind Patrick Thompson and his family as he appeared for sentencing on Monday August 7. Thompson received a guilty verdict for home invasion and sexual abuse one month ago. Judge Clem granted a continuance set for October 2, 2006 and allowed Bob Kirchner to take over as Thompson's new attorney. Kirchner will be filing a motion for re-trial in this highly controversial case.

In 2004, Black activists Patrick Thompson and Martell Miller were videotaping police behavior in Black neighborhoods in Champaign-Urbana. A day after bogus charges of felony eavesdropping were brought against Miller (charges that were later dropped), the equally baseless charges of home invasion and sexual abuse were brought against Thompson. This is a crime with no evidence, no eye-witnesses, and an investigating officer who admits he never visited the scene of the crime. The accuser, a white woman, has a history of similar allegations against Black men. She also has had warrants for her arrest and criminal charges of child endangerment mysteriously which were dropped throughout the term of this case. Thompson faces 6-30 years for a crime he did not commit.

On Saturday, July 22 at 8 p.m. a vigil will be held for Quentin Larry, Terrell Layfield, and others who have died while in police custody at the Champaign County jail. Bring a candle and meet us at 204 E. Main, downtown Urbana, in front of the Champaign County Sheriff's office.

This vigil is first to honor the individuals and their families. Secondly, it is a call for an independent investigation into the five deaths that have occurred within the past two years. We plan to go to the Champaign County Board with the demand that an independent investigation be conducted into all five deaths.
