Democracy in Action at Champaign Unit 4 School Board Meeting
13 Apr 2006
On Monday evening, April 10th, on a lark, I turned on the community access TV channel, which for me, like for many folks, is sadly too often one more channel to click over in futile pursuit of substantial entertainment. There, in front of a jerky camera, an African American woman was making an impassioned plea to the Unit 4 School Board to withdraw their proposal to hire armed police officers to patrol inside our community’s schools. I listened for a few moments, and then reached for my jacket and car keys, hoping that by the time I drove the ten blocks down to the Mellon building, she would still be standing behind the podium and it wouldn’t be too late to show some sign of support.

democracy breaks out in C-U
12 Apr 2006
Democracy breaks out. Voters en masse approve referenda for fall ballot. Pro-war, pro-Bush folks show their true colors. DI story title misses the mark, story gets it right. I sent the DI this letter to the editor. You can write them, too.

Justice is for “Just Us”
26 Mar 2006
Community Court Watch begins

It was Illinois native Richard Pryor who first told the joke that American justice was for “just-us,” it was only an instrument of white power. Whether Vice President Dick Cheney, lobbyist Jack Abramoff, Enron executive Ken Lay, or celebrity caterer Martha Stewart, these figures are not served the same justice as the rest of the 2.3 million Americans who sit in America's prisons. But we do not have to look to Washington D.C. to find stories of white collar crime, the crimes often committed by white-skinned authorities who hold high-powered positions. Several recent examples have been exposed in Champaign County.

John Lee Johnson, RIP but Remembered
24 Mar 2006
Modified: 07:21:44 PM
Long-time local African-American activist John Lee Johnson has passed away. He will be missed by a community who he greatly influenced. He was said to either irritate you or agitate you -- or sometimes both at the same time. But there is no question that without his efforts our community would care less about many things he worked to bring attention and action to address. Memories of John Lee are welcome here.
