Latin Americans are increasingly rejecting "neoliberalismo," the economic experiment that their governments have adopted -- at Washington's urging - - over the last two decades. There can be no doubt as to the failure of this experiment, which has included indiscriminate opening to foreign trade and investment flows, large scale privatizations, and the widespread implementation of unsuccessful macro-economic policies advocated by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). |

The U.S. military has a long record of strong-arming the scientific community, stretching back to the Manhattan Project, when Pentagon policies are questioned or objected to by scientists. Although Senator Joesph McCarthy is long dead, his spirit lives on in the Bush Administration. McCarthy was brought down by questioning loyalty in the military. We can only hope that the present policies being pursued in Washington take down only the perpatrators and not the entire nation. |

It is by these crucial and measurable criteria that the American people, and any politician who wants to lead them, must judge the war in Iraq and Bush's leadership. Those of us who were against the war and continue to oppose the assumptions on which it was based fear that future events will answer these questions to the grave detriment of American and international security. |
