More than 165 grassroots groups have publicly opposed the Thomas Dorr nomination. The Senate Agriculture committee gave Dorr a vote of no confidence last week when it did not recommend the nomination. |

Carl Estabrook, The Green Party candidate for Congress in Illinois' 15th District, is opening an office in Champaign.
There will be a Grand Opening of the new office on Sunday, August 11, from 2 to 5 PM. The address is 24 E. Green St., Champaign, in the Green Street Center. Estabrook is using the occasion to contrast his energy policies with those of the incumbent, U.S. Rep. Timothy Johnson (R). |

In light of Champaign's announced crackdown on postering starting on August 15, it is important to remember that there are a number of significant issues beyond "beautifying Campustown" connected to Champaign's threats to impose fines (on local businesses and organizations potentially amounting to hundreds of dollars) for supposed violations of its new ordinance. Free speech is threatened by these draconian measures. Public space shrinks everyday as more and more of it is unofficially literally "privatized" even as it still remains public space. |
