Fruited Plain Food Co-op Gets 100th Member |

The Fruited Plain Cooperative Society was formed in Fall 1998 as an
independent food co-op with a mission to serve the Champaign-Urbana
area. The staff and volunteers of this new C-U economic institution have
worked hard in the intervening time to spread the co-op message and can
now celebrate an important milestone: their 100th member. |

Who grabbed whose land?
The Champaign County Based Coalition for Traditional Values has chosen it's second annual award winner of the "CTV Family Values Award 2001" for community service in the best interest of area families. On July 3rd, the group will present it's award to Rich Porter, the founder of a grass roots group designed to stop the potential Indian casino and landgrab lawsuit targeting landowners in the state. Porter was chosen for his hard work to stop the unfair attempts to use Indian law to get land and ultimately a casino in this area. |

Locally, Supervalu, based in Minnesota, got away with the kind of tactics this bill addresses. Supervalu fired more than 150 workers in its Urbana transportation dept just over two years ago for union organizing and got away with it. This, in spite of the fact that the dept. head was unwilling to lie for the company and volunteered to testify about Supervalu's lawbreaking to the NLRB, who prevented him from testifying. The company brought in to take these jobs, supposedly independent Brisk Transportation, is owned by the brother-in-law of the chairman of the board of Supervalu. ML |

Rep. Tim Johnson has signed on as a co-sponsor of Fast Track. The only question is- Why? NAFTA has been a massive failure for farmers, with commodity prices hitting new lows, making it difficult for family farmers to continue. The only people in agriculture who will benefit from the the proposed "Free Trade Area of the Americas" will be large commodity trading corporations. It will be the nail in the coffin of the family farmer and will bring an even greater economic crisis to rural America. We will follow-up on this story as it develops. ML |
