A significant and grim milestone in the occupation of Iraq has been reached -- 1,000 US dead. Yet this fact is scarcely mentioned in the midst of the coronation ceremonies going on at the RNC in New York. Yet this singular accomplishment of Bush's goes by without comment from most of the press. The trend lines described by J., who used info from the databse maintained by Cryptome, is a reminder that Iraq, and the sacrifices being made there, is something to be pushed out of the news when it comes to the hard facts, versus Bush's heroic rhetoric. After all, if you're in Bush's shoes, a potential future president isn't over there risking his life for a misguided policy, he or she is probably cooling his or her heels at an exclusive college taking part in Young Republican activities, since the poverty draft is the only draft we have now. No need for any National Guard evasions (and besides, that'd be too dangerous for a future president, since the Guard and Reserve are now in the thick of it, unlike when Bush safely dodged combat during Vietnam.) |

Just as the swift boats of August have been spreading thick spray, the Goss hearings next month and debate on Roberts’ cockamamie proposal on restructuring—so outlandish as to have zero chance of passing—can be counted upon to spread enough fog to keep the mayhem in Iraq off the front pages and distract attention from the president’s most serious vulnerabilities. Karl Rove is counting on it, and he’s cleverer by half.
Iraq? The CIA made us do it. |
