Kerry, Lieberman, And The House Democratic Leadership Attack Dean |

It is unclear what political advantage could be gained from this attack on Dean, the current front runner for the Democratic presidential nomination. According to a nationwide public opinion poll this past May from the Program on International Policy Attitudes at the University of Maryland, a clear majority of Americans not only recognized that the Bush Administration is biased towards Israel, but, when asked about what position the United States should have, a full 73% stated that the United States should not take either side in the conflict. |

Venezuela's Recall |
by Mark Weisbrot (No verified email address) |
Current rating: 0 14 Sep 2003

Washington has weighed in, too. Bush Administration officials, embarrassed by their support for the military coup, have quietly endorsed the recall election. They have also cut off US Export-Import Bank credits to Venezuela and renewed complaints that Venezuela is not helping their "counterterrorism" and "antidrug" efforts in Colombia. |

The Tax-Cut Con |

Bruce Tinsley's comic strip, ''Mallard Fillmore,'' is, he says, ''for the average person out there: the forgotten American taxpayer who's sick of the liberal media.'' In June, that forgotten taxpayer made an appearance in the strip, attacking his TV set with a baseball bat and yelling: ''I can't afford to send my kids to college, or even take 'em out of their substandard public school, because the federal, state and local governments take more than 50 percent of my income in taxes. And then the guy on the news asks with a straight face whether or not we can 'afford' tax cuts.''
But that's just a cartoon...
The reason Tinsley's comic strip about the angry taxpayer caught my eye was, of course, that the numbers were all wrong. Very few Americans pay as much as 50 percent of their income in taxes; on average, families near the middle of the income distribution pay only about half that percentage in federal, state and local taxes combined.
In fact, though most Americans feel that they pay too much in taxes, they get off quite lightly compared with the citizens of other advanced countries. Furthermore, for most Americans tax rates probably haven't risen for a generation. And a few Americans -- namely those with high incomes -- face much lower taxes than they did a generation ago. |

Iraq, Bin Laden, 911 And Our Soldiers. |
by Gabrielle Reilly (No verified email address) |

How is Iraq, Bin Laden, 911 and our Soldiers connected? When public figures, the media, or people in general, take a position on an issue it often becomes more important to be “right” than to be emotionally intelligent enough to seek the truth. It appears that so much information is being swept under the carpet by the media and politicians who protested the war and by the Bush Administrationâ€(TM)s withholding of information so intelligence collection is not jeopardized. It has become very difficult to know what to believe at times, so letâ€(TM)s review 911 and the war in Iraq. |
