Attacks on Pledge Ruling Bolster Its Logic |

The most disingenuous assertions in support of the Pledge status quo related to the purpose of adding "under God"-- an important constitutional question, since church/state separation questions typically hinge on the secular intent of governmental action. |

In Illinois, public education has been underfunded for years while politicians argue about what to do about it. Taking money from an underfunded public school system to subsidize religious education should be a political scandal...but it would not be surprizing to see such a scheme promoted this election year following this abysmal Supreme Court ruling.

If you have not heard of us yet we are AWARE, Anti War Anti Racism Effort here in Urbana Champaign and tonight
AWARE had a workParty to make signs and banners for the
July 4th Parade this thursday.
I have brought much of what we made here to the IMC along with some paints and other art supplies from Art & Revolution last winter for Art and Revolution Now!
Please come to the IMC before Thursday and work on sign making and developing ideas that will make people Aware.
Also, I will be here both Tuesday and Wednesday evening and Thursday Morning. |

New Old Navy not welcome by all |

On June 3, Champaign welcomed the grand opening of a brand new Old Navy store in north Champaign. However not all visitors were so welcoming, as a number of anti-Old Navy/Gap notes were secretly distributed across the store and parking lot. |

Just wanted to make sure you've heard about the STARC summer conference happening just outside of Nashville, TN at Middle Tenn. State U. this Aug 9-12. Suzanne Pharr, director of the Highlander Center is our confirmed keynoter and we'll be having panels of local students working for racial justice talk about their struggles. Tons of other workshops including movement history, and storytelling with a 30 year old theatre troupe from Knoxville. Conference is free, housing/food is free. A federal judge in New York declared the death penalty unconstitutional today, saying evidence has shown that there is an "undue risk" that a meaningful number of innocent people have been executed. |

At first, Illinois didn't think any iodine pills needed to be distributed, although several other states that also have a large number of reactors decided this was a wise move in light of the possibility that a terrorist incident might breach a reactor's shielding. Now the Illinois Department of Nuclear Safety wants to buy just enough pills for those within a ten-mile radius of the Clinton Nuclear Power Plant, operated by Exelon. |
