George Will is one of the News-Gazette's favorite columnists since he is a local boy who has climbed into the corridors of power. He always pontificates in a holier-than-thou tone about the alleged moral superiority of the conservative cause. Like most of these people, his position on political morality is mostly about what standards OTHERS should follow, so they don't pose a threat to the powers that be, rather than actually embracing these lofty standards himself. |

The ILSR and the New Rules website are helpful resources for all those seeking to develop their communities in ways that are sustainable, democratic, and based on the greatest good for all residents. This is a real contrast to the way communities in Champaign County currently handle development. Here the only important issues are how much money can we hand to developers with no strings attached and how big the headlines will be for the politician handing the public's wallet over to the private sector. |

The issue of tracking of black children described in the following article is just one of the issues that the Champaign schools need to address. This Harvard study shows that it is a problem that extends beyond isolated school systems. Racism was "outlawed" in an official sense, but it is still a systemic problem that must be addressed by going beyond the window-dressing of simply removing discriminatory laws. |
