On Wed. Feb. 28 NPR President Kevin Klose appeared on the 20th anniversary program of WILL public radio's call-in talk show Focus 580. Local citizens took this as their opportunity to put tough questions to the NPR head. |
It's a rare occasion that average citizen radio listeners have the opportunity to question the head of the largest public radio network in the U.S., and listeners to WILL-AM in Urbana, IL gladly used it on Wed. Feb. 28. Kevin Klose, NPR's president was posed listeners' questions about his background at the U.S. Information Agency, about the quality of NPR's journalism, and about corporate underwriting, especially recent underwriting announcements sponsored by the nation of Kuwait.
Since this was a special anniversary edition of Focus 580, WILL hosted a studio audience, of which I was a member. About half-way through the program I stood up to ask Mr. Klose about his and NPR's opposition to low-power FM radio, which Congress severely limited last year.
Appreciation goes to WILL-AM for being one of the last radio stations in the country that does not pre-screen callers to its talk shows, which allows challenging questions to make their way even to the head honcho of WILL's own network.
