Former Illinois Governor George Ryan and filmmaker Kirsten Johnson will be in town to present a special screening of her controversial film, "Deadline", which premiered this year at Sundance Film Festival. "Deadline" follows Ryan’s decision to grant blanket clemency to all 167 people on death row in Illinois, commuting their sentences to life without parole. It also is a compelling look inside America's prisons, highlighting one man's unlikely and historic actions against the system. |

Wal-Mart has created such high barriers to qualify for its health care benefits, that many workers are left dependent on publicly financed medical services, a largely hidden taxpayer subsidy. According to a research study in California, Wal-Mart workers seek $86 million a year in state aid because of inadequate wages and benefits. In effect, Wal-mart cleverly shifts a portion of its labor costs to the public. |

Religion Is A Legal Tool, Not A Spiritual Tool |

Activists and Anarchists who still believe in ghosts, gods, spooks, and spirits, have no idea that the issues in today's civilization, that they fight so hard to resolve, all began as a result of Old Testament religions. Every single one of them. Protesting an issue, and at the same time, praying to a Jewish god (or Allah) to help resolve the same issue, is like trying to "have your cake and eat it too." What you worship is what enslaved you in the first place. |

"Support Our Troops" is a wonderful patriotic slogan. But the best way to support troops thrust by unwise commanders in chief into ill-advised adventures like Vietnam and Iraq is to bring them home. Sooner rather than later. That should be our New Year's resolution. |

U.S. Political Attacks on Venezuela Continue |

No reputable human rights organization would claim that Venezuela under Chavez is less democratic that under previous governments, or compares unfavorably in terms of human rights or democratic freedoms to the rest of Latin America.
On the positive side, even Chavez' opponents concede that millions of poor Venezuelans -- the majority -- now have access to health care, education, literacy programs, land titles, and credit for the first time, as a result of the government's social programs.
Sadly, the biggest threats to Venezuela's democracy still come from Washington, which has funded and allied itself with the anti-democratic leaders of Venezuela's opposition, including supporters of the failed coup. |

Somalia: Continuation of War by Other Means? |

TITLE: Somalia: Continuation of War by Other Means?
AUTHOR: International Crisis Group
CATEGORY: Eastern Region
DATE: 12/21/2004
SOURCE: ICG. Africa report #88
SUMMARY & COMMENT: Despite apparent progress indicated by the
declaration in October of a Transitional Federal Government (TFG),
Somalia’s peace process risks collapse, leaving the country a dangerous
failed state, unless a genuine government of national unity can emerge.
The TFG should have been reason to celebrate: after nearly fifteen years
of statelessness and civil strife and two years of tortuous peace
negotiations in Kenya, Somalia seemed to be emerging from its crisis.
But the peace process has since gone largely downhill. The country is
still controlled by a patchwork of factions, land remains occupied, and
violations of the ceasefire and UN arms embargo are rife. The TFG has to
tackle these issues, while earning the legitimacy to do so effectively.
Otherwise the peace process will stall, and Somalia will likely return
to all-out violence. |
