Illinois General Assembly unrepresentative structurally, says taskforce
Current rating: 0
10 Jul 2001
Two decades after one of the most monumental reforms in Illinois history, a task force of politicians is calling for a reversal. The law supposedly saved money in government salaries and office expenses by cutting out one-third of the Illinois General Assembly and eliminating MULTIPLE LAWMAKERS were elected from each district instead of only one. But now a 70-member task force led by former Congressman Abner Mikva (Dem.) and former Gov. Jim Edgar (Rep.), says the changes resulted in lower voter turnout, tougher hurdles to victory for women and minority candidates, & the concentration of power.

Suppressed Report on Ongoing Test Failures of Nat'l Missile Defense Released
Current rating: 0
10 Jul 2001
I received notice today, via Steven Aftergood's "Secrecy News", that this long awaited report on the repeated failures in National Missile Defense testing, including the dumbing-down of the tests themselves in a weak attempt to make it APPEAR that the system MIGHT work someday, has been released. Be advised that the pdf download of the report itself is a big one (9544k). The analysis offered by a link on the webpage is much shorter and is a good summary of the findings of the Coyle Report itself. ML

world's worst knock-knock joke--we tried to warn you!
Current rating: 0
09 Jul 2001
We've tried to warn you. Now it's already too late in forty states. If you're a U.S. citizen, you'd better be quiet, well-behaved and pleasantly conformist. Involuntary outpatient commitment (IOC) is law in 40 states and the District of Columbia. The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI), largely a drug company front group, has pushed hard for IOC in every state and territory - and NAMI is winning.

Resistence to Privatization of Public Lands Grows
Current rating: 0
09 Jul 2001
Over 100 protesters faced armed Forest Fee Police (formerly Forest Rangers) in Colorado. This case relates to the whole range of attempts by corporate-controlled gov't to compel citizens to pay AGAIN for things they already paid for in taxes and which they already own by birthright.

Cautionary Tale From A Professional Journalist
Current rating: 0
09 Jul 2001
An excerpt of an informative article in the American Journalism Review July, 2001 issue. IMC reporters might want to take note of the issues raised in it about the potential for use of our work by government intelligence agencies. The attempted use of subpoenas to pry loose the IMC logs by the FBI and Secret Service in April is only the most obvious way to obtain info. Think of the unintended consequences when you publish to avoid regretable situations.
