On January 20, the Urbana City Council, in a 5-0 voted, extended paid sick, bereavement and family medical leave to city employees in same-sex relationships. This ordinance now allows gay and lesbian employees to receive some of the same benefits as heterosexual employees.
Below is my speech before the City Council in favor of the ordinance. Alderman Joe Whelan not only opposed the ordinance, but he used the vote as an opportunity to invalidate and undermine same-sex relationships. |

Finding a quarter-billion acres for adequate feed grain harvests would mean at least a 7 percent increase in cropland worldwide at a time when farmers are already using most of the better land. Much of the newly plowed acreage would likely be marginal, subject to greater erosion and requiring extra generous applications of fertilizer and pesticides. |

The report accuses the U.S. and other western governments of responding to Azerbaijan's recent elections and the crackdown that followed them by sending muted and contradictory messages, capped by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld's visit last month. Rumsfeld personally congratulated the younger Aliev on his election victory, but otherwise refused to make any comment on the political situation. |
