Two Minutes to Midnight: The Nuclear Peril
Current rating: 0
19 Jun 2006
It is impossible to assess the extent to which the various treaty and conventions have reduced the risk of nuclear war but both sides have adhered to the arms control regimes to avoid the menace of annihilation. President Bush has already demonstrated his belief that international laws are optional when American interests are at stake but he has now clearly exhibited his ignorance and utter contempt for some of the most important arms control treaties whose purpose has been to protect human civilization from the scourge of nuclear war.

Fight for a Free Press
Current rating: 0
19 Jun 2006
Democracy is premised on a free press, and freedom of the press is premised on the absence of public or private gatekeepers with monopolistic power.

Political Fundamentalism or Pot Luck Democracy
Current rating: 0
19 Jun 2006
The last ten years we have seen a successful effort to frame politics not as a process among politically equal citizens, but as a ‘war’ of ‘Us-vs-Them’, a conflict that includes End-Justifies-Means reasoning, Winner-Take-All stakes, dire punishment for losers, the stifling of dissent, and carrot-and-stick legislation to enforce orthodoxy.

This kind of political fundamentalism is antithetical to democracy because it comes with predetermined conclusions about what is right or necessary for the common good, as well as pre-ordained rules about individual freedoms.

Re-Regulation of the Economy
Current rating: 0
19 Jun 2006
"Finance markets become judges over the economy punishing mistakes with (threaten-ed) capital flight." Resisting re-regulation represses blind spots and confuses the goat and the gardener, the market and the fire department and the problem and the solution

I.R.S. Checking Compliance by Tax-Exempt Hospitals
Current rating: 0
18 Jun 2006
This is a story of local interest, since questions have been raised about Carle and Provena's fulfillment of their obligation to offer healthcare to all as reflected in the non-profit status of many of their operations. State and local inquires are now joined by a federal effort to get the bottom of what being a "charitable" hospital means.

How US Hid the Suicide Secrets of Guantanamo
Current rating: 0
18 Jun 2006
After three inmates killed themselves, the Pentagon declared the suicides an act of 'asymmetric warfare', banned the media and went on a PR offensive. But as despair grows within the camp, so too does outrage mount at its brutal and secretive regime

HUD to New Orleans Poor: "Go F(ind) Yourself (Housing)!"
Current rating: 0
18 Jun 2006
This demolition plan continues HUD's efforts to get out of the housing business. In 1996, New Orleans had 13,694 units of conventional public housing. Before Katrina, New Orleans was down to half that, 7,379 units of conventional public housing. If they are allowed to accelerate the demolition, public housing in New Orleans will have been reduced by 85% in the past decade.

The federal demolition of housing in New Orleans continues a nation-wide trend that has led some critics to suggest changing HUD's official name to the Department of Demolition of Public Housing.

Much of the public housing demolition nationally comes through of a federal program titled "Hope VI" - a cruelly misnamed program that destroys low income housing in the name of creating "mixed income housing."

Dead Unionists No Hurdle to Free Trade
Current rating: 0
17 Jun 2006
"Having a free trade agreement with a country that allows trade unionists to be murdered with impunity is outrageous," said Bob Perillo, author of the report by the AFL-CIO Solidarity Centre in Washington, titled "The Struggle for Worker Rights in Colombia".
