The conference, spanning three days, will focus on social causes, tactics, education, analysis, actions, philosophy, and history of the Animal Liberation movement. Topics include: Politics of Culture; Building Bridges Between Academics and Activists; Animal Ethics; Pedagogy of a Rebel; Being a Former ALF Member; Feminist Imperatives and the ALF; Human Rights and Animal Rights: Solidarity with the ALF; and more. Presented in panel and discussion form, each topic will be discussed and examined to produce academic dialogue that will advance the movement. Gourmet Cruelty will present Delicacy of Despair, documenting a liberation of ducks on a foie gras farm. And, concluding the conference, a benefit show will be held Sunday night that will showcase bands that support Animal Liberation performing cover songs.

To mark the one-year anniversary of the beginning of the Iraq war, Action Coalition of Taos and Veterans for Peace will topple a twenty-foot effigy of Taos resident Donald Rumsfeld. This action will take place during a rally at the Taos Plaza calling for the end of the Iraqi occupation, one of hundreds worldwide taking place on Saturday, March 20th with the theme "The World Still Says No to War." The statue will depict Rumsfeld riding a missile a la "Dr. Strangelove," recalling the film's final scene marking the end of the world

American Troops are Killing and Abusing Afghans, Rights Body Says

Its military forces have repeatedly used deadly force from helicopter gunships and small and heavy arms fire during "what are essentially law-enforcement operations" to arrest suspected criminals in residential areas where there is no military conflict, the report says.

On Job Front, 'Recovery' Meaningless

Notably missing from the president's description of why "we're doing so good here in America" is any mention of jobs. Yes, the stock market is up, as are corporate profits. If you work on Wall Street, these are indeed good times. But to most Americans, the primary function of an economy is not to drive up stocks, but to put people to work so they can support themselves and their families and contribute to their country. By that very human measure, a jobless recovery is not a recovery at all.
