The FCC Media Bureau report analyzes the impact of deregulation in the radio industry. The report states that from March 1996 through March 2003, the number of commercial radio stations on the air rose 5.9 percent while the number of station owners fell 35 percent....Boxer asked that the agency "examine whether it was then or is now the practice of the FCC to suppress facts that are contrary to a desired outcome." |

We all know about Selma and Birmingham, but it is a little-discussed fact that St. Augustine, Florida was the center of great civil unrest and was instrumental in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1967. The effects of this conflict are still very apparent in today's St. Augustine, where although it is not official, segregation and prejudice still hover over the lives of many African-Americans. |

It's going to be very inetresting to see how this report is received at the University of Illinois. Some departments are notbale for the progress they've made in this regard. All you need to do is walk down the halls and see the photos of faculty from the 1960s and then compare it to the faculty we know today. Other departments, including disciplines pointed out as having nation-wide problems -- to be charitable where finger- pointing can no longer be avoided -- have lagged behind. |
