Washington recognizes India as a nuclear power in the middle of negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program. That is a tatal sig-nal. Governments in the third world ask why India's disdain of disarmament is now given priority while Iran is treated so harshly. |

Estate Tax 'Reform': Wealthy Should Pay Their Fair Share |
by Joan Claybrook and Dave Eiffert (No verified email address) |

As America faces ballooning budget deficits and a record national debt, it is irresponsible to provide new tax breaks for the wealthiest citizens. Studies show repeal of the estate tax would cost the government roughly $1 trillion over the first 10 years, roughly what it would take to provide health insurance for every uninsured American. |

THERE IS NO "WAR ON TERROR" |
by LARRY EVEREST (No verified email address) |

There is no "war on terror." The invasion and occupation of Iraq are not part of a "war on terror." Neither are the current threats and war preparations against Iran. The "war on terror" doesn't exist—no matter how many times the Bush administration cites it to justify its aggressions, no matter how often Republicans and Democrats debate how to best carry it out, and no matter how frequently it's referenced in the U.S. bourgeois media. |

Hawks Attack Those Who Dare to Speak Up |
by Cynthia Tucker (No verified email address) |

If the peculiar ability to accept only rosy scenarios and optimistic forecasts about Iraq were limited to armchair hawks, it would hardly matter. But that same intentional blindness permeated the White House, the Pentagon and the ranks of neoconservative cheerleaders in the months before the invasion. |

Army Manual to Skip Geneva Detainee Rule |
by Julian E. Barnes (No verified email address) |

|
President Bush's critics and supporters have debated whether it is possible to prove a direct link between administration declarations that it will not be bound by Geneva and events such as the abuses at Abu Ghraib or the killings of Iraqi civilians last year in Haditha, allegedly by Marines.
But the exclusion of the Geneva provisions may make it more difficult for the administration to portray such incidents as aberrations. And it undercuts contentions that U.S. forces follow the strictest, most broadly accepted standards when fighting wars.
"The rest of the world is completely convinced that we are busy torturing people," said Oona A. Hathaway, an expert in international law at Yale Law School. "Whether that is true or not, the fact we keep refusing to provide these protections in our formal directives puts a lot of fuel on the fire." |

The US government saw itself forced to climb down in two central foreign policy questions. Washington's efforts to completely cut off the Palestinian authority's money supply were stopped. In the iraq question, Bush was manoevered offside in the Security Council. |

Help Us with a Book about Indymedia |
by NYC-IMC Print Team (No verified email address) |
Current rating: 0 04 Jun 2006
|
This book would not attempt to be the definitive statement on Indymedia. Rather, it would be an overview of some of the triumphs and struggles of the network over the past five-and-a-half years. Its entries would range from dramatic, stream-of-thought, first-person pieces to more analytic chapters on the meaning of Indymedia. The book, while thoughtful, would avoid being overly academic and would be graphic/picture heavy.

All this will be harmful in future for American climate, atmosphere & people of America.
