The decline in union representation is due to many factors -- including unbridled corporate globalization -- but high among them is Taft-Hartley and our system of inadequate legal protections for workers. Other industrialized countries with more substantial legal protections for workers -- such as Canada and countries throughout Western Europe -- evidence much higher rates of union membership. |

This article in The Washington Post on Labor Day is actually on point. Written by the President of UNITE which represents textile workers across the country, it drives home what manufacturing was in NC. Where here in the Midwest you have GM, Ford, and Caterpillar towns, in the south, it's hog processing or textiles. And with textiles disappearing to Mexico more and more people are without employment opportunity. |
