U of I Chancellor Aiken "permanently retracts" student athlete gag order

The following e-mail was just sent out to all U of I students, faculty and staff from Chancellor Michael Aiken. In it he retracts his previously imposed gag order preventing University personnel from contacting potential U of I student athletes, under the suspicion that opponents to the University's Mascot, Chief Illiniwek, would attempt to convince them not to attend the U of I.

The ACLU challenged Aiken's gag order, and as he notes, won a court order declaring it invalid.

Cincinnati vigil expands to 64 people still in jail from the april uprising

Editor's Note: The OVIMC has just reported that all those arrested over the last weekend protesting police killings of African-Americans in Cincinnati have been released. There are still a number of people in jail from the original protests over the killing of Timothy Thomas back in April. The jail vigil continues in solidarity for them. ML

Last weekend (May 19-20), public radio managers and journalists from NPR affiliates across the country met in Seattle for a cheery discussion of the network's expansion into new markets via digital broadcast technology. Many of NPR's core listeners in Seattle and elsewhere depend on the network for daily in-depth news coverage which is - they have faith - more free from corporate bias and more diverse than commercial radio and TV news.
